Any damage after running out of petrol?

I ran out of petrol today and was wondering if it could cause any damage to the engine .
I've heard dirty petrol could get into the engine . Is this a possibility . If so what would be the best remedy to minimise any damage.

    Thanks

The only damage that could happen is that your cat can be broken.

There shouldn't really be a problem but it is possible (but unlikely) that when the tank is low dirt could get past the fuel filter and into the system.
AFAIK petrol in the tank also acts as a lubricant for the fuel pump so the tank should be kept above the min mark!
