    Hi,

just a query for those employed in Marketing. What do you think are the job prospects for a Marketing student finishing a Masters in 2009? Can't imagine its all that great really, but would like to hear what those working in the industry think. Are budgets cut, is there less work out there, is there a possibility of lay off's where your working? Is marketing really the first area that gets cut? Out of my degree class only 1 person is working in Marketing and thats not in Ireland.

    Thanks
    Luke

There are jobs in online marketing so you should think about specialising in this area. While you're looking for a job, spend time learning about this area and experimenting with personal websites or hobby websites or a local business that is happy to let you try out some SEO on their website. You can learn online about Google's Advertising Programmes and invest a small amount in experimenting with their ads or ask a friend. Jobs have not fallen off so much in the IT sector, facility service providers and renewable energy companies so try targeting those. You should also read the book "What colour is your parachute" - great advice for job hunting. Good luck and don't be disheartened!

thanks for that info. One of the reasons I'm doing the masters is that I couldnt find a (decent) job over the summer so decided to go back.

I've been working on a website/blog for the last month and teaching myself how to put it all together, looking at SEO, google advertising etc. A lot of SME's that come into talk to us know very little about the area and seem to be very technophobic. Although I have a funny feeling I'll have to look further than Ireland for work at this stage.

I'll def check out that book. thanks again.

Do you know what kind of marketing you want to get into?

As you are probably already aware, Marketing is a very broad term loosely thrown around. You're best to establish:
-what route you want to go down?
    -what industry?
-where you think the industry is heading?

Have you registered with any marketing agencies / (online) magazines to see what opportunities exist out there. Once you know what kind of industry you want to head into, you should find a dedicated recruitment agency for that industry.

Possible check out, BrandRepublic.com, NewMediaAge.co.uk if you have any thoughts of moving into Digital Media / Advertising. Despite the economics conditions, there are still jobs available over here in London.

    Hope this helps.

Have you thought about applying for the IBEC Export Orientation Program? They have a lot of marketing internships with sponsor companies.

    thanks for the replies.

@Eljono, I have applied for the EOP and a few more, an Enterprise Ireland grad program which closed last week. But I would imagine the competition for places will be much more intense than in previous years.

@d-arke. I guess I'm moving slowly towards online/digital marketing, in my class i'm definatly more the techy one, and probably know more about emergeing trends online than some of my lecturers, my thesis is looking at consumer motivation to interact with brands on social networking sites. Everything from high street retail sales to newspaper circulations are falling as more and more services move online.

When you mention registering with Marketing Agencies are you talking about employment agencies? I had applied for a few jobs in London last year and found the agencies to be fairly rubbish. I also do read Brand Republic and about a dozen digital & marketing blogs, I'll check out New Media Age. Cheer's

Yes, I meant register with some marketing (online/digital) recruitment agencies. With regards London, try the following:
-Morati Media (Think thats how you spell it)
    -Round8
    -Sylex Recruitment
    -Digital People

Good website I would recommend also is SimplyNewMediaJobs.com.

Depends what kind of role you are looking for. For the most part, as a newbie, you would either go into Sales or Trafficking / Operations. You should definitely look into jobs with any of the big social networking sites.

If you need any more advice give me a shout.

I am in similar position to Mr.Luke. I am nearly finished a post grad in marketing that provided work experience.

Are the likes of jobs.ie and monster.ie a waste of time for marketing positions?

Anybody think its worth joining the Marketing Institute of Ireland?

I sat the marketing Institute exam last June, mainly to get as many qualifications as possible knowing the economy was going to hit the skids and to 'differentiate' myself as much as I can from everybody else going for marketing jobs.

From what I have seen the Insititute organise a lot of networking events, they have a jobs section on their website and a trade magazine which is an ok read. Its €230 (ish) to sit the exam and your first years membership is free if you pass the exam. Afaik no one failed it last year and I managed an 'A' with a hangover in it.

Thanks for your reply. So all in all do you think it is worth it(value for money) joining the Marketing Institute of Ireland?

TBH - no. I have not made the effort in any way to 'network' (hate that term) mainly due to time constraints. I'll probably find more use once I finish college and actually start looking for work. Does it make any difference to employers when they're looking for staff? I can't answer that one.

Thats a very worrying post in this day and age. Networking is about essential communications, and not just that but about presenting yourself as a brand. To get a job you need to sell yourself and your skills.

Sorry maybe my post was taken up wrong, I was very tired when posting. I was referring to the networking events set up by the Marketing Institiute, and not networking as such.

Re. the Marketing Institute events: I haven't made the effort due to study so I felt that for me being a member hasn't had any benefits - yet. But I cant answer if an employer will place a value on an MMII qualification or not as I went from a degree course into a masters. Maybe someone in the industry can answer that question. If employers do find it relevant then of course its worth it.

Re. 'networking' I just don't like the term. However, that doesnt mean I don't do it.

Your thesis sounds really interesting Luke, best of luck with it.

On a semi related note. I finsihed my degree last year and am working now in a totally different area but I would like to get into marketing at least part time however I would also like to do a masters but can't afford to leave my job. Where are you doing your masters out of interest?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 103 ✭✭MrLuke

    Thanks guinnessdrinker.

I'm doing it in WIT. Not a bad course, although very tough in terms of workload. You always have a few projects due in and the thesis in the background. I just can't wait to finish it now.

Yeah, I know some people doing their own masters this year, a lot of work. It will be worth it in the end though I'm sure.

I recieved an email today calling me for interview for this programme. I was wondering if anyone has done these interviews/programme before? How did you find it if you did?

I have done it, if you've any questions, p.m. me.

It would appear as though the Enterprise Ireland Grad Programme is dead in the water, unless something surprising happens, which is unlikely at best.

The best way for a recent grad to get a marketing job is to start an affiliate site on something that they really like and build it up. It's a no lose situation. You get experience with SEO, Internet marketing, copy writing (very important), and running a business. If the site does well then you won't need to get a job. If the site does ok, you can use it on your CV. Even if the site tanks, it's still a worthwhile experience and you will learn from it.

There are some affiliate manager jobs out there. You need to have a background as an active affiliate marketer to get these jobs. The future of marketing is online.

I have an Online service that is ready to go live. I want to partner with an Online Marketing Expert who would share in profits. This is not a job offer, its a partnership quest.
