I have installed cairo dock on Ubuntu. Works a treat but i was just wondering is there any way to get rid of the black background that pops up along with it?

I'd guess that you're probably missing a composite manager (eg. Compiz, Beryl or whatever Ubuntu uses now). Without one it won't be able to render the transparent effect. I don't use it myself though so I could be miles off.

Try out avant window manager as well if cairo dock acts buggy or just gets annoying. Less fancy but does the job better.

Check out Gnome do aswell. It has made amazing developments in the last month.

I use it non stop but have turned off the dock part of it.

    I didn't know Gnome-Do had a dock, must have a look. It's a great yoke alright, Gnome-Do.

I've tried other docks, Cairo and Avant but I found them a bit buggy - I don't really bother with docks anymore.
