I've heard of the Asus EEE something or other but before buying it I would just like to know are there any other competitors in the small laptop market? Thanks

Read the Samsung NC10 thread. I have one and I would recommend one.

Toshiba do small notebooks too. not bad. I have the eee, and it's grand for browsing, but for anything more serious i use the 'proper' notebook or desktop. I have the original 4g, which is slow and gets overwhelmed quite easily. on the positive side it's pretty tough, mine has had the crap battered out of it over the last year and still goes.

Got my girlfriend the EeePC 1000H for xmas. It's a deadly little machine - have to say I was really suprised. Has the 1.6 Ghz Intel Atom and 1 GB of RAM but running XP Home its actually quite fast. Really depends on what applications you are looking to run. If its just browsing the net and running yer Office type apps it'll definately do the job.

I have an advent 4211 and my sister just bought one today as well. Fantastic little machine so it is. :)

I'll be using it for surfing the net, a bit of microsoft word, maybe some oldskool games that require 2kb of ram like Quake or DoomII! The most important thing though is that I'll mainly be using it for editing photographs. Could these little machines handle photoshop?

I have photoshop installed on my advent 4211. And it runs fine for basic usage, i'm not a big photoshop user so thats all i wanted. But dont expect stellar performance from photoshop out of these machines, it does work though.

They would but they might be a bit slow and sluggish with it.

    Thanks for the info.

Also I forgot to ask, which of these is the most compact? I will be travelling with this. Without being ridiculousy small like.

10" (like the 4211, nc10) in my opinion is the perfect size. Not too big, not too small.

Cushion is spot on. I'd also recopmmend going for a 10". If your looking to edit photos and the like maybe look at Photoshop Elements if you want it to be that bit smoother. Although having said that, the EeePC 1000H will certainly run the more hefty versions - ie. CS4.
Office apps won't be a problem at all. My girlfirend has been running Office 2007 with no problems.
I even have a mate who is running Ableton Loops and Fruity Loops for music production. Again, it's surpising how much kick these little guys actually have.

Samsung NC10 - just google "samsung NC10 review" and you'll see why!
    - great battery life and the perfect combination of performance/mobility/usability.
