I'm traveling to Oz in April for 6 week's, flying into Melbourne and out Sydney. Was planning on flying up to Cairns and driving back down to Sydney but now think this may take to long . Would really like to see the Barrier reef though. any advice anyone?

The part between Cairns & Brisbane is definitely worth visiting, especially the whitsundays and Fraser Island. It would be a shame to come to Australia and not experience them.

I'd do the Cairns --> Brisbane drive ahead of the Brisbane --> Sydney drive any day.
