I know there are education forums but in this forum everyone who comes will have an interest in computing and there will be a greater number of people who are studying, have studied or are now working in computing so please don't move the thread.

I have TCD down as my first choice, UCD as my second and I'm torn over whether to put down the DIT or DCU courses next..

    help please!

What field of computing are you specifically interested in?

Sorry I should have mentioned that. I've taken a some FÁS and FETAC courses on computer networking, PC maintenance and a bit of Visual Basic. I also have a Cisco lab built at home and I'm currently working on becoming a CCNA and I would like to start working towards an MCP.

That said programming also interests me a lot even though I only touched on a bit with Visual Basic and I want to try perl and python, I use linux, I like messing around with VMs and I think open source software is great and I would very much like to learn more about and contribute to it.

So basically I like networking and programming but if I had to choose it would be the latter.

I don't know if it would be an option but i studied computers in DKIT and can't recommend it enough. Class numbers are far smaller than the larger Dublin universities/ITs so you get more time with lecturers and get all your questions answered.
I did a cert with an add on ordinary degree and then an add on honours degree. It's a good method as after 2 years you feel you don't like the course you can leave and you still have a cert. That course would cover almost everything you have mentioned apart from perl and python.
Good luck with wherever you decide.

I am in year 2 of Computing at DIT kevin street at the moment.
Course is okay, but I would recommend going for the DT228 course as it's a bit broader and a little less domain specific than the 211 course.

They are very similar, but the 211 course is a little more rigid with regard to subject choices.
I intend moving to 228 soon myself, so carefully evaluate both courses before making a decision.
Making this mistake can prove a bit of a nuisance, so again , choose wisely.

For example, you do Cisco Networking in 211, but I genuinely feel the networking modules should be taught in a higher non cisco slanted approach like 228.
Also, If you don't like computer networking, you will f****** hate DT211.

Good luck anyway with the decision.
