Don't buy the 116i or 316i - small underpowered engines.
You would probably be better off going for a diesel if you are importing anyhow!

Was looking at 2006ish 1-series up north for around that price range (inclusive of VRT). New Low Tax band would be preferential.

Hate to burst your bubble but only 2008 registered cars have the Co2 motor tax. Pre 2008 cars are still taxed on engine size irrespective of being an import or not.

And for the record I think a 116i or 316i are pointless. You should be looking at the 118d or 318d at least. Slightly higher motor tax will be more than offset by better fuel economy and lower VRT.

Yea i know but it applies to imports regardless of year.

The VRT will be based on Co2 emmissions, but the road tax for any car registered before 08 will be based on the old system, whether it's imported or not.

    Hi there,

I looking to spend around €12-14 grand on a car. I want good German Build Quality (looking at 1-Series, Audi a3 or hi spec golf.) ....Must have cruise control and climate control. and wouldnt mind leather.

...mmm, lots of people still looking for good German build quality. And they work for the German car industry :) !...why not just Quality of build ? Unfortunately, German build quality isn't what it used to be you know..........even Skoda beats VW now.....which must be most disconcerting to the lads in Wolfsburg..........

..as pointed out by Ned, you'll be on 'old' cc-tax unless you bring in a post Jan 08 car. There goes your 12k budget........:(

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”
