A couple of problems with the C: drive

The C: drive is 34GB. The properties for all folders shows a total size of 11GB. Wondering where the other 22GB is gone. There is 1GB of free space. It's set to Show All Files and Show OS files. Disk Management shows the C: partition as 34GB with two other unassigned partitions of 78MB and 3GB.

I deleted two old user accounts and chose the Delete Files option. But the files are still in the Documents and Setting folder and I don't have permission to delete these. File system is NTFS but I don't have the Security tab when I Properties any folder.

Anyone know where the disk space is and why I can't delete the files for the deleted users?

Boot into safe mode as admin an bin those files yourself. It always puzzles me how windows steals away gb after gb like a squirrel preparing for winter.

Download ccleaner*, give it a run. Once removed about 7Gb of crap from my old laptop.

*the extra c stands for crap!

Can't delete from Safe Mode either. ccleaner freed up 145mb but wouldn't delete Documents and Settings for the deleted users.

TreeSize shows 11GB used space, same as Windows.

Trying to enable the Security tab so to see if I can take ownership of the folders/reset security.

Edit: Just read that the Security Tab is only available in safe mode in XP Home.

Be cafeful deleting files. Where is most of the 11Gb being used?

Also have a look at this
Will delete xp's hotfix files are are not used (unless you decide to uninstall one of them....unlikey)

Could be system restore using a load of space too.
Turn it off and on to reclaim space used by the restore points.

Manually create another restore point if you do this.

Finally, delete the porn folder on your desktop.

I'm looking for the 20+GB of space that makes up the capacity (34GB) minus Used space (11GB) + free space (1GB). But I'm buggered if I can find it. Show All Files and Show OS files is enabled.

The files I'm trying to delete are the profiles of the user I deleted in User Accounts.

I logged on as Administrator in Safe Mode, went into Secuirty, took ownershiop and Full Control. After this I'm getting Cannot Delete: Access is Denied, the first time I try to delete the user folder. The second time I try to delete it I get the message Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source file or disk.

I'm sure if I hack at it long enough I'll get it! :) Gonna remove all security and re-add for the file delete problem.

Got the profiles deleted more of less so have 7GB free now. Still puzzled by the large amount of missing GB.

Edit: Culprit is the System Restore folder.

    Ahhh system restore.

At times like these I always feel a good format and reinstall is the best option! Clears out any stupid programs that have been installed over the years, your PC will run quicker after a format too. Just back up what you want on an external hdd.

I did it on my vostro (partly because i hated vista, and because things were slowing down), tis flying now, backed up everything, and had drivers and 90% of my usefully programs installed again in about 30 mins after reinstall.
