After a long wait im finally in a situation when ntl should be available to me assuming the letter they sent me today about upgrading my road is true.

My big question is how are they about the cap ? ive currently a 50gb cap per month with digi web which i generally stick to but constantly have to keep an aye on it ? i see it says no cap on two of their products but how much have people downloaded without them going mad ? ie if i downloaded a 100gb a month am i going to get in trouble with them.

Don't bother with the no cap bundles, they don't have any way of checking how much you're downloading ;) it's just scaremongering. I was on the 6MB pack 2 years ago and downloaded over 200Gb some months :D (Linux Distros in case you're wondering)

THey may not charge you for going over now but I presume that is subjec to change.

If you abuse their network, they will call you on it if it is affecting other users. They'd be crazy not to TBH.

Its always best to respect your contract if possible (says the guy who just exceeded his 30GB cap).

UPC certainly do have a way of telling your usage I know because I've seen stats for mine when I had cable with them after I got a heavy user warning from them.

UPC have in the past warned a high number of users and disconnected others for continued heavy usage

upc know exactly how much you have downloaded and they can break it down to find out how much an hour you have downloaded.unless you are completely over the top there shouldn't be an issue.

They where disconnected for breaking their caps back then. I haven't seen anyone post here who is on a "no cap" package saying they got a warning for breaking a "no cap" download limit? :pac:

    +1

since UPC steped in and made the max and ultra pack capless i havent heard of any warnings.

UPC are a european style ISP who are more inclined to improving there network to handle what people want rather than irish and UK old sytle 'cap everyone and i leave the network dated' theory.

They both disconnected and warned people in the past, granted it hasn't happened in awhile now but they do reserve the right and nobody can cry about it when it happens

I would assume, like Cabaal said, that if you were consistently taking the p*ss, you'd probably get a warning at least from them - not sure if they would then disconnect you if you kept it up. That said, if your ISP currently gives you only 50GB, you'll be much happier with UPC. I'm currently on 135GB download only for this month (measuring upload accurately is pretty tricky, since most of it is video streaming on my internal network) and they haven't made a fuss about it (my usage is probably around that mark for the last few months). And I'd imagine that after the first month of not having a hard cap (where you'll probably go mental downloading everything and anything :)), you just won't notice anymore and not worry about the cap at all...

Has it happen with the new "no cap" packages Cabaal?

It hasn't yet to my knowledge but given the times we're now entering I wouldn't be surprised if they soon do send warning letters to very heavy users.

Lets remember that there is no such thing as a true unlimited ISP......as outlined here http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=58094826&postcount=11 I'd class very heavy as say 400GB+

I've downloaded upwards of 800gb so far this month. September to January would have been about 200-400gb each. I wouldn't worry too much about their cap unless you!re approaching this. I haven't been warned/contacted by UPC.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,067 ✭✭✭L31mr0d

Well I'm not as bad as Tazzle, but I'd average about 100GB's+ per week. My connection with UPC is also fairly steady so I'm usually getting a solid 2.3MB/s down.

I never worry about it though, I only really know how much I've downloaded because I'm constantly running out of HDD space :(

why would you think he's lying? I check my daily downloads and in one day I downloaded 27GB. I could easily do double that in one day if there was stuff I needed.

I've heard of users on Smart doing 1TB a month, I've seen people do close to it.
800GB in a month is very do-able...storage is the issue at this stage though :)

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 2,563 ✭✭✭Tazzle

The thing with this connection is you don't have to worry about storage half the time, download a 10gb HD movie, watch it, delete it. Want it again? Won't take that long to get. The amount of things I've downloaded and not even watched before deleting is ridiculous.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,816 ✭✭✭corny

Are UPC still interferring without torrent applications?

Very much so it appears. I converted to usenet when I got UPC. Torrents are never going to be as quick.

    Thats overkill tbh.

Its people like you which cause caps to be implemented.

Yea I aggree thats a bit extreme alright. its reasons also why I can never have a good online game of xbox without connection problems and timing out. and don't give me the usual that you do it off peak.. my connection gets worse after 12pm every night. gets unplayable. very frustrating..
and also is usenet an alternative to rapidshare? if so whats there dailey download limit?

Usenet is a network of peering servers, it dosnt have any limits and never will.

Its the oldest, fastest, safest and best method of file sharing.
    Hands down.

People who harp on about rapidshare in the dark, how could a private site be anything in comparisin.

So its a bit like torrents is it? you have to upload to get download?
I'll check that website out.. so is usenet the program and you use other sites to get links to files?
Like I'm happy with the RS hit my full connection nearly all the time, but had to sign up to there new contract(2gb per day rolling over to max of 12gb) and also have my 50+gb of use when i go over

cisk banned for month due to warez discussions which is against charter, post deleted.

I'd suggest everyone remember that boards.ie is not the place to discuss your warez needs!
