I guess they is a reason why people are importing second hand cars ?
but since Sterling is weak and the new cars are better spec'ed in the UK, why not import a new car ?

It really depends on the car in question.

On a new car you have to pay VAT aswell as VRT so along with a rediculouse overvalued OMSP on some models you may not be saving a whole lot to make it worth your while.

The biggest savings would probably be on nearly new cars, you avoid paying VAT by looking for a car that is at least 6 months old with at least 6,000 km on the clock.

depends on the car, do a search. there are examples on here of people saving 8k or so bringing in brand new BMW 3 series diesels.

Do you have to pay Irish Vat if you have already paid UK VAT. Wouldn't have thought so?

If you have paid UK VAT on a less than 6 month old or less than 6000kms car then you have done so in error.

It's a new car by EU law and you have to pay Irish VAT on it.

OK !! So you don't get hit with VAT twice.

Well you could do, some dealers in UK don't want the hassle and will just charge you VAT if you don't know that you shouldn't have to pay.
