    Hi guys,

I’ve been asked this question by one of the most expensive car producers in England as part of an assignment, and i was wondering if I could get some input. Who will be able to afford one of these cars (~£150k) in 2015.

I guess the state of the economy in that year must be considered, as well as the wealth of different countries and the kind of people who will be able to afford it.

What is your take on this? Would anyone be willing to share their opinions?

I'm not too sure of the question and I am unsure of the product. An "expensive" car of circa 150k per car - what's the demand for this in 2015? Short answer is that it depends, what exactly is the product? Is it a off-beat 10-litre sports car that has high running costs? is it an amoured plated diplomatic transport carrier? Is it an Nissan Micra competitor? :) In 2015 will it be doing 10,000 MPG? See where I am going? In economics speak I think this is the cost of the benefit or satisfaction or something like that

These sort of things feed into the strategy of the organization and without more info it's difficult to predict will £150k car be in demand.

FWIW and I think this is OT in the Ecomomics forum, read the CEO of Honda Motor Corp's speach about the next few years, it gives a good insight to what's really going on and how Honda are going to rise to the challenges. I like Honda as a corp entity and I am releived to see there are some real innovators out there:

    Hi,

    Thank you for the reply.

Its fair to say that at the moment these cars are large and consume lots of petrol (~6.5L engines). Something like Bentley or a Rolls-Royce.

Thank for your input, now that I have given more details about the car would that help? P.s thanks for the link.

Well the market for luxury cars like RRs and Bentleys is fairly small in the first place anyway. Also maufacturers like these are suffering from competition from makers like BMW and Benz who's top of the range cars are always snapping at their heels from a cost perspective.

However, the purchase of a prestige car like a RR or Bentley is more of a personality statement than anything else. And for this the market will still exist. I would however think that manufacturers like these will need to spend money on and demonstrate some serious innovation into their cars over the next few years as a race we go looking for "greener" cars. The whole industry is moving there and Prestige makers will be dragged there also - or they will go bust.

IMO there will always be less a demand for prestige cars, unless they offer something special. BMW's 760 series, Lexus LS600, etc all offer an outstanding product for the money with serious innovation wrapped up. If the company you mention isn't competing at this level already then I would imagine their market will be seriously diminished.
