Tell the Garda you've just bought the car, most are very reasonable about this.

if they want they can check it, and may ask you to produce evidence re change of ownership at a garda station when the cert comes

Car gets taken off you. €125 for the first 24hrs and €35 for every 24hrs after that.

Oh and a summons to court. And dont forget we can check the sale date of your car too

If you have a receipt keep it in the car and show it.

How do you mean 'evidence re change of ownership' ie: insurance?

when the date was signed will be the day you bought the car. that'll be on the vehicle licencing system

I bought the car privately! There is no proof- I have no receipt stating the change of ownership!

thats why the previous owner is supposed to be sending off the change of ownership, sure you could be racking up penalty points in their name.

I'm fairly sure he's a Garda, so i'd be listening to him.

You are here to find out if you will get away with breaking the law, i hope you don't. Pay what's due like everyone else in this country. If you don't plan on doing so, don't look for comfort of us.

Currently there are no penalty points for non display of road tax. List of offences here.

It's not a loop hole, it's very easy see how to do it. Just none of us are stupid enough to try it.
