Do any standard-def Freesat boxes support recording?

    Hi all,

I'm looking to replace my existing FTA receiver, and would like a PVR that supports recording of one channel while watching another. (I'm changing my LNB to a quad and running a second cable to the living room to support this.)

I've found some of the recent threads here on Freesat very informative, and it seems that the family would like Freesat for the 7-day EPG and the way it keeps the channel listings up to date.

Are there any Freesat receivers available that support PVR? The only one I've seen mentioned is the elusive Humax Foxsat HDR.

I don't particularly need HD, which is why I'm interested in a standard-def freesat unit with PVR.

    Thanks,
    Buffer.

Freesat is a UK (BBC/ITV) brand and includes HD Channels on HD Freeat boxes. There is also a SD version of these boxes as well, but none of them support PVR. Other PVRs for Freesat, besides Humax, are due soon - check out joinfreesat.co.uk for details

There are plenty of FTA PVRs out there, I dont know if any support 7 day EPG - I'm sure there are others more knowledgeable than me who could advise

Doesn't record one/watch another require twin tuners?

Yes, a box with two inputs and two internal decoders. That's why I'm running a second satellite cable.

If anyone knows of one, I'd certainly be interested to hear about it.

Lidl had a twin tuner sat receiver for sale some time ago, probably will again.

However, again, it didn't have 7 day listings, only now and next.

TBH, I'd say you'll be hard pressed to find any receiver with 7 day listing and twin tuner other than the Humax HD PVR. Others that can be made compatible are more expensive (some Dreamboxs come to mind, though these are far from plug n' play).

Unless a Freesat SD PVR is due out soon...

HD boxen will work fine with a regular TV.

    via SCART.

I'm saving my cents for the Humax HD PVR.

I think it's a good solution even without an HD TV.

None have dual decoders. You can only play or watch one stream. You can receive two. There are boxes even with up to six tuners, but only one decoder for viewing.

    Yes, of course.

Indeed, but I was hoping for something that's a bit less expensive and a bit more available -- the impression I get is that the Humax HDR is hard to get.

My mistake. I thought that the stream being recorded was decoded before recording, but of course it makes more sense for it to operate as you have said.
