    Kinetic,

I got Wilson Fi5 s from Ebay in the States. Wilson isn't the most popular brand but I'm raving about these clubs. They are part blade and part cavity back and the feel of them is great. They are good value too and especially when you take into account the favourable fx rate.

GlobalGolf is a good US store - some great bargains out there if your willing to take the risk of buying before trying!

Thanks tipp.I have to admit i never considered Wilsons (think there is a bit of snobbery about them from years ago)but ill give them a look.

kinetic I got a brand new set of MP57's in Mc Guirks for €499 a few weeks ago, serious value for an excellent set of clubs, still getting used to them but I'd definitely recommend them.

Search for a thread I started on them for other peoples opinions aswell, very positive feedback all-round though.

I have the AP2s and really love them. Look great, feel great. Fill you with confidence at address. Couldn't see any from Europe on eBay. Got mine (4-Gap W, 5.5 Project X shafts) locally here in Clare. Saw Golfstyle in galway doing a reasonable deal on them. If you're like me and use a hybrid you might be better off asking the store to take out the 3iron and order in a gap wedge for you.

The AP2s may be fractionally more forgiving than the 52s. Either set would be lovely to own.

Whats kind of putting me off these is Titleist saying they are for the more skilled player, and the AP1's are for mid handicappers.
Then mizunos are aimed at mid to low handicaps.
I cant see why you would buy the AP1s as opposed to a forged mizuno.
    Do i make sense.

By the way im off 11

Well your miss with the AP1s would probably be closer than your miss with the Mizunos. So you might take less shots.

I'm expecting big things from the Callway X22s after the X20s were received pretty poorly. They'll be mad money though.

AP2s would be perfect for you. Not saying they're better than the Mizunos .. that would seem to be a matter of preference but you would have absolutely no problems with them off 11.

Do you mind me asking what they cost?

Not sure I can actually recall. I was trading in a set so I can't remember the RRP to be honest. Sorry.

    its very simple

    Forget the names and makes

Get out and hit them if possible and you will know what suits you better!!
McGuirks are very good for demo clubs
I know lofts, shafts etc on the demos might not be perfect but you will know by the feel of them when your hitting them if they suit you, well it works for me!!

    They are all quality clubs

€499 is a good price, but its still a far wad of cash to be handing over the counter, if you haven't been custom fit before I would recommend you do this before splashing out on irons. There are some top end places (All fore golf I think) but there's other places (Green 18, sandyford and Leopardstown Gofl centre) who will do a custom fit for approx €50, and if you buy your clubs off them they usually discount it off the price.

Clearly shopping in the wrong shops!!!!haha

I have hit them and the half-cavitites are very nice, great feel and decent forgiveness considering how blady they look

try out the x-18 pro series older and cheaper great club......said i'd never use callaways coz didn't like the chunky look, these are a slimmed down version with no off set , so easy to work ball and big sweet spot
Or the callaway x-forged are beauts....feel v. good

previously had 2 sets of mizuno's incl mp-32's

I bought chunky-ish Taylor Mades with little off-set last summer. Never looked back.

In the same boat - want to go from graphites back to steel shafts. I was all on for Callaway x 20's but there seems to be a lot of negative reviews on them out there, as SSheet pointed out.
    I'm now considering Wilson D 9's. Some advice / opinion please -
Is the lie of the club very important (I'm playing off 12)?
Anyone playing the D 9's at the moment?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14 thin2win

The MP-52's are serious clubs, similar to AP2's but much better and at a nicer price :)

Seen the Wilson Di9's, havent hit them tho. Got a decent review in the 2009 hot list!! The 42deg PW mite be a worry tho. Think the is pob better clubs out there IMO (MX200, G10's, Tour Burner) but prob worth a look anyway. Get custom fit on them!!!

I too was looking to get a new set of irons .I play off 13 in a fairly competive society and try to get out say every 3 saturdays as i have a young family, the clubs i have at the moment are a old wilson set (cant think of model now)but i was going to look at the wilson d19 as well or should i be looking at something else i dont want to pay a mad amount as the d19 can be got online for about 250sterling .would there be anything else around that price that i should look at
    Thanks

Well there are a few new models out at the moment, the Di9's are nice, not too chunky and very forgiving. Mizuno MX-100 and MX-200 both did well in reviews and are not too expensive. There is the Callaway X-22, its nice but not much different to the X-20 and that wasn't too hot when it came out first. Taylormade Tour Burner, nice club thats forgiving but not too chunky.

IMO the best thing to do is try them and most importantly get custom fit. There can be a huge difference in lie angles and length between the manufacturers (Mizuno generally flatter and shorter, with taylormade/wilson more upright)

Go for Mizuno when going for irons IMO.

    Can't go wrong.

I bought AP2's a few months back and got 129 euro knocked off at McGuirks at Leopardstown. I paid €780 in the end - maybe they are cheaper now.

I would strongly recommend them - best irons I have ever played with (once I got used to them!)
