    Hi Guys..

i was hoping to get my boyfriend a radio for his tractor for valentines...not very romantic i know, but practical, like himself.

but i am a bit of a dunce when it comes to things like this.
Where would i get one? would i have to buy from some agri store.(is there an agri store?) do i need to know the make and model of the tractor? its a ford..thats all i know, oh and its blue. Its 1996.
If i got it for him, would he be able to install it himself, or would it need to be done by some tractor mechanic or at a ford tractor dealer place..

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated..

    Car radio will do.
Try Halfords or Argos or your local Motor Factors.

Should be able to install it himself, especially if he normaly dose his own repairs.
If the tractor is 24V then he will need an extra device to reduce the power to the radio to 12V.
Most tractors are 12V anyway. But he will Know.

You really do have your man's welfare at heart!!!

Lidl or Aldi occasionally do good ones, or at least ones good enough for a tractor, e.g. multi-band, CD player, MP3 plug-in, SMC card slot etc. I know because I put one into the 390 myself a couple of years ago and it's working fine, though I had a bit of stripping to do to attach the speakers and aerial. The brackets also didn't fit exactly spot-on but I secured the radio with a small cable-tie. Cost me about €80 at the time, though they've probably come back a little since. Whether or not Lidl or Aldi will have a promotion before Valentine's day you will have to check out - look at their website I guess.

I also threw in a Lidl/Aldi radio with USB and bluetooth handsfree into the Ares. The radio had an ISO connector, so I went and bought a Renault-ISO adaptor in Halfords and it plugged straight in.

What type of radio (if any) is in it now? It may or may not have a permanent live feed there already to keep memory of radio active (store the channels) when the ignition is off.

We got a stereo for a tractor before from a car breakers, might even be less romantic but at least it would be cheap and practical and environmentally friendly. I am sure he will know somebody who will put it in.

There is a radio in it already, i guess if i could have a look at that then i might have a better idea, but thats not possible at the moment, i rarely spend time on the farm with him and he would find it strange if i requested a spin in the tractor..

i think i might just go into a place that sells them and ask them which one would suit best. It doesnt have to be a top of the range one, or even have a cd player, just a radio will do fine.

    thanks for all the help.

A CD player in a Trctor is as bout as much use as Roll-on hairspray.
If he wants to listen to his own music hes better off with a Tape deck (if they still exist) or a USB/SD slot.

I disagree. Mine can play MP3 CD's and is excellent with no skipping at all (although having cab suspension is probably a big factor here). It also has a USB port which is very useful indeed. That said, I spent a few days driving a JCB 412 loading shovel last year and the CD player worked perfectly well in it, too.

OK fair enough depends very much on the Tractor.
But she said its a Ford and I don't think there are any Ford Models with suspension.
Any Ford modern enough to have a Supension I would imagine would be under the New Holland Badge.

As for the Loading shovel you were driving: Thats a fairly big machine which you were probably driving on a concrete yard can't imagine it bouncing around the place very much.

Obviously depending on the work involved a CD player can work in a tractor with out defying the laws of Physics. But from my experience in my MF390T (no suspension) CD's skip crossing rough ground and also have a tendancy to get damaged from being in the cab.

I was only suggesting the USB port is a better option.
