Where are you saving the file too? Desktop or My Documents?

Could you be saving it too a external device like a USB key by mistake?

Saving it to my documents. But if I save it as a Word xml document it will open fine. It's just the normal word document that won't reopen.Don't have any external device to save to

If you browse to the file from Word itself will it open? (File-Open-MyDocuments-File)

It wouldn't do any harm, but I don't know why the file isn't opening if it's physically stored in the same location it was saved.

Does the filename remain the same when you go back and try to open it? No extra characters besides what you called the file.

Before you reinstall you could try Detect and Repair which is found in Help in Word / Excel

How are you opening the files when you get the error? Are you double-clicking on it from within Windows Explorer? It sounds like something else has grabbed or removed the file association.

Try doing Shift + right-click on the file. Choose "Open With..." from the popup menu and selecting Word if it's in the list. If it's not in the list click Choose Program and select Word from the list that appears in the next window.

Are you using full stops in the document name? As in Slow.Motion.doc? If so this will confuse word into thinking you are saving it as a different file type and therefore will not see it from within word but will let you open it up using explorer!

I can honestly say I've never heard of that happening before! Just out of curiousity I added '.' between the words of a filename and tried to open it with Word. It opened normally as I expected. What version of Word do you have that does that? I'm using Word 2003.

Your right I am talking about older versions of word, this was quite common for students to do when I used to teach it, don't know what version the OP has so this could be it, it's certainly worth a try before re-installing the whole package!
