This may not be the exact correct forum but anyway. Some one was showing me how to play this on guitar last night(an easy 4 chorder for anyone interested) and we differred on our opinions on what it was about. I had never taken much notice of it but thought it was an environmental/green sort of song but my friend reckoned it was about a divorce through a childs eyes. So anyway...heres the song and lyrics if anyone cares:rolleyes:

    You were a child,
crawlin' on your knees toward it.
    Makin' mama so proud,
but your voice is too loud.
We like to watch you laughing.
    Pickin' insects off plants.
No time to think of consequences.

    Control yourself.
Take only what you need from it.
    A family of trees wanting,
    To be haunted.

    The water is warm,
    but its sending me shivers.
    A baby is born,
    crying out for attention.
    Memories fade,
like looking through a fogged mirror
Decisions to decisions are made and not fought
    But I thought,
    this wouldn't hurt a lot.
    I guess not.

i'd say it's about growing up and the innocence of being a kid,but really it's a bit vague so i think you could say that it implies several meanings

ive heard The song was written about Andrew Wood, the late frontman of late eighties hard rock band, Mother Love Bone (from wikipedia).
the rest of that band went on to form pearl jam i think or something to that effect. Andrew died of a heroin overdose so i imagine that has something to do with the control yourself take only what you need from it/him/them

In fairness it's a crackin song, and sounds very good on the oul acoustic.

It was for me in 2008 what 'Catch You' by Sophie Ellis Bextor was in 2007 - a great pop choon.

Well I suppose I'm not exactly one to talk - myself and Mister Howitzer above spent many the Sunday chasing goths around Tralee with Mmm Bop blaring out of the car.

Irritated them greatly, but we enjoyed it thoroughly.

What can I say - Hanson are class.

Their recent song 'Penny & Me' was pretty decent.

Ah that's albums ago - the latest album is wicked. The Walk it's called.

Great Divide and Been There Before are super tunes.

    Most underrated band evar imo.

Just a song on growing up I think, reminds me of that white stripes song...'I can tell that we are gonna be friends' :D

MGMT really annoy me for some reason, I just can't put my finger on it. Anyway when I heard "Take only what you need from it", I just assumed they were socialists and that was the end of that.
