Port Forwarding Problem. Again!

Hey, I've had this problem before and I got it sorted. This time nothing I try is working. I've read loads of posts and faq's about it but nothing is working. The problem is I'm using Transmission as my torrent app. It uses port 51413 as default port. In Transmission I have the automatically map port (using NAT) option turned on also. I'm using the generic eircom netopia router. I followed instructions on portforward.com to setup my router to forward port 51413 to my static IP (macbook) using NAT. I'm still getting extremely slow speeds and Transmission reports that the port is closed. My osx firewall is allowing all connections to Transmission so at this stage I don't know what the story is. It all worked fine until I used it on another network for a while and now it wont work at home.

Is there anyway to open the port, rather than fowarding it or is that the same thing. According to any website I've checked port 51413 is closed to the outside world.

P.S. I didn't post on any transmission forums because I've read over similiar threads and I've tried their suggestions. Maybe it's a router thing rather than the app.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

What OS do you have? Leopard deals with ports differently to Tiger.

Turn your firewall on the router to low or medium or in fact turn it off briefly to see how your speeds go.

Router firewall is set to low. Using OSX 10.5.6. Average speeds are 5k up and 3k down. It's strange. Anytime I check the port is closed.

I take it that the firewall in System Preferences>Security is set to allow uTorrent all incoming connections or is set to allow all incoming connections?

well I'm on 10.5.6 over a wireless connection, have dlink 2640b router, usenet forwarded to iMac and getting around 750-1mb a sec, so I don't think it's 10.5.6.

Now are you sure Eircom aren't blocking or throttling your connection, have you d/l a lot this week/month? Check your stats this could be the reason. Try tomato torrent client and see if this exhibits the same behaviour.

Thanks for all the replies. I haven't been downloading much at all this month so I don't think it's eircom throttling my connection. I've tried utorrent, bit rocket, and tomato torrent all with no luck. I personally think it's a router issue, so I might try to update it later to see if that helps.

Use netstat -p or similar to check that transmission is binding to the correct port.

I have found port forwarding tricky on a wireless connection. Try it wired and see if its any better? Also change the port and see if that works.

Transmissions port reporting can be a bit dodgy sometimes as they use a 3rd party website to do the check, sometimes that site is overloaded or offline. I wouldn't rely on it.
