Applying for a Fork Lift Licence.

Hi Folks.

I'm going to a apply for a fork lift licence.

I see from the net there's a few places that do them.

However, does anyone know which one's are best.

I'm sure like everything else, there are good one's and not so good one's.

Can anyone recommned a place. (I live in North Dublin)

Is there a standard licence I should get that will cover all.

There are several categories of forklift licences. The most common are counterbalance & reach trucks. There isn't one license to cover all. You have to be tested individually in order to get your ticket.
Don't know about all the testers/trainers but i used the forklift centre for training my crew.

I made a few phone calls.

For one place a 2 day course is €450.

And for a 4 day its €495.

Is this the norm, I'm going to be funding this myself, and thats a week wages for me!

I have driven forklifts before, should I take the beginners or go straight for the experienced 2 day course, is the exam difficult to pass.

I can't advise you on which course to take, it is completely dependant on your level of competency & knowledge of the theory. The price sounds about right & unfortunately i doubt you'll get it any less anywhere else.

The last time i organised training was about 2 years ago. The format then was the same principle as the old style driving test. i.e. 30 minute quiz followed by exercises on the forks. I don't know if the test format has changed since. It isn't a hard test to pass, but there is a lot about health & safety, daily machine checks, pedestrian safety & safe operations.
The 3 or 4 days basically broke down into 1 to 1 & a half days practical followed by theory on DVD & paper. If the examiner didn't feel confident enough for the operator to do the test he would say so after the first day or so on practical.

Thinking of going for forklift licence but out of work and €450 is a bit much at the moment!

How long are you out of work? If over 6 moths, talk to your local FAS centre. Have seen people doing these courses at FAS centres sometimes, and I know they train you in some courses free if you're out of work for more than 6 months.

As far as i know FAS do run a course that includes a forklift licence, its called an "Introduction to Warehousing" or something similar, hopes this helps, but you do need to be unemployed for 6 months, good luck!:)
