Dish alignment

    Hi,

North Dublin, Friday evening I realigned my dish (Astra sat) because my freesat wasn't coming through particularly clearly. All worked fine, watched BBC HD that evening no probs.

Was away on Saturday, came back yesterday and all freesat channels gone and instead I've a bunch of German channels. I'm using a HTPC for decoding by the way, not a set-top box.

Was it very windy on Saturday night in Dublin? Can't understand how the dish got so knocked about that it's showing German stuff.

I know when I'm aligning the dish that if I get the alignment slightly wrong then I do end up getting those German channels (not sure of the sat they're on) but have never got them as a result of bad weather.

    Anyone have any ideas?

Sure was windy, but if you're getting German channels, then you're pointing at Astra 1 on 19E. More torque on the bolts when you get it re-aligned on Astra 2:)

Had the same problem recently and solved it with a ten yoyo compass and a read out from www.dishpointer.com

They have a Google Maps mashup for satellite pointing.

So, select the Map option on thw maps window and then select your satellite.

It then gives you exact bearings for it.

When you get your compass, set you compass dial to the reading given for Azimuth (magn). This is the magnetic compass bearing.

When the compass aligns north, the bearing pointer will point directly at the desired satellite. You can then fine tune with the signal strength or a satellite tuner.

Worked a treat for me in Dublin 15.
