Just got a text from my uncle there. His only car key for his car has been lost in transit by the airline and the car is parked up in Cork airport. I'm thinking he's majorly screwed if it doesn't turn up.

I'm also thinking it's a main dealer job or is there any independent around Cork that could sort it for him? Car will have to be towed whether or which...nice start to the week:rolleyes:

I would say main dealer is your best bet, i work for VW and all keys for 97> cars must be supplied from us, due to manufacturers not giving out the key codes, this is to make it harder to get copies so random people cant get keys cut to steal cars, hope this helps.

cheers. Turns out the car isn't in cork but shannon and it was a flight from the states so the bag could be absolutely anywhere! He'd to rent a car to get to cork. This'll cost him a fortune by the time its done. Do you know if they can get into the car without damage if its towed to them?

Surely the airline will be liable for all and any costs incurred.

I would tell him to get on the phone asap or offer to do it for him.

They may give out the key so you can open the car and tow it to the garage but the key will not start the car until its coded to the ECU.

Your uncle has a problem here. There are new regulations, introduced worldwide by Mercedes, which require the car to be in a dealers before a key can be ordered. It is required that the diagnostic tool is plugged into the car to read some key info before the order will be accepted. There are a couple of independent Merc specialists who can manage this though. He should probably contact whoever normally services the car for him. Hopefully he is known to a good dealer of independent.

I would imagine his travel insurance should cover this.

Sorry, that’s 100% wrong. There are many independent garages who can code all VW keys, usually faster and cheaper than the dealer.

That, along with ID used to be enough, not any more.

my key for my 00 merc died on me.

Called a friend who's an engineer for main dealer, gave him the vin code (but they do require proof of ownership) it'll take a few days to get the new key.

Open the car with the metal key (not sure what's gonna happen with the alarm though) he'll have to sit in the car for at least 20 mins (45 in my case for the s class) for the car to pair with key, once done it should be all sorted.

Follow the dealerships instructions to a T as you could be sitting there for hours trying to get the key and the car to mate.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the replies. He's already been onto the airline about the costs. No sign of the bag yet and its missing since Friday so hope is fading on that one. It's Turners Cross Motors that usually service it for him but I suppose somewhere in Limerick would be better (and not just because its closer...ahem...)

I'd get teh car clamped, or at leat moved to a location other than the airport, incase the person who finds the key is a scumbag.
