At the minute i have a sky box and ive just got my hands on a second hand sky+ box. My boyfriend is going to run the extra cable in and then ill need to phone sky customer services. My question is will they require i have a landline to complete installation-i paid the e37 last year for the sky installation?? My Dad did the same thing a couple of weeks ago with no problems but he has a landline

    No, is the short answer.

When you ring up Sky to get them to marry your viewing card to the Sky+ box, they enable the Sky+ features over the satelite signal.

With a self install, as in you propvide all the gubbins yourself, the additional capabilities are a free service.

As I discovere this morning when I set my own stuff up!

Just don't forget to do the firmware update on the Sky+ box if it has been sitting about for a while.

So if I was to do the same thing (ie buy a second hand sky+ box), I can just plug it in instead of my current sky box, stick my card in, call Sky Cust Svcs and that's it? No charges etc?

Your nearly right kcools. As long as you have the correct equipment like 4way LNB and two runs of cable from LNB to your box your sorted. There is no charge for the card/sky part of the job but if you haven't got the above equipment it's easier to get sky to do it.

Thanks for the reply. Sounds like I might be better off asking Sky to do it!

Just done some reseach on the interwebulator and those 4 way LNB's don't seem that difficult to set up. Am I correct in thinking that they just split the signal? The reason I'm curious is because I have Sky through the apartment building scheme - ie we have one sat dish for the whole block and points individually in the apartments. Could I split the signal I get from the point in my apartment and plug those in to a sky+ box?

Not with a quad lnb. Ypu need your apartment provider to set you up with a second cable run from the communal dish

Sorry for thread hijacking, BUT do you HAVE to have a landline if you buy a 2nd hand Sky+ box.

I have a non sub Standard Sky box for the ususal free channels. But it would be nice to replace this with a Sky + box.
Can I do this easily by just running another cable from my quad LNB to the Sky+ box.

Thanks and sorry for thread hijacking :)

I dont have a landline and its working no problems. And yes you need a second cable coming from the lmb to the box-we had to get a new lmb too and we also needed two F connectors along with the cable-i think that information is right. My uncle is an aerial/satellite installer and he got the box and all the rest for me. Then you just ring sky and they set it up for you

I have a Sky Dish and quad LNB and a cable running to the Sky box already.

So if I run another cable, get me a Sky + box on Ebay, then can I use it as I am already without ringing Sky or getting a Sub :)

you will still need to ring sky to activate your viewing card on the sky + box.

Alrighty, I have a viewing card already in my skybox, which is one of them for the freeview, BBC, ITV's, E4 etc.
Can I not just swap the card into that? :)

ahh i see. You need a valid subscription for sky +
it wont work with a non sub card! :(

hope this clears it up for you.

Once you have a valid subscription, you'll be OK.

    Yeah, what he said!

There is no charge for going over to Sky+ if you have the infrastructure already in place and an existing Sky subscription.

You would have no trouble at all, both me and my dad have done it!!! Its such a great piece of technology-good luck!!!

I done something like this last year (got a Pace PVR 3 still in sealed box with a quad LNB thrown in from e-bay dealer). But back then you needed to subscribe to one of the premium services (sports or movies) to avoid the 'plus' charge. Does this still apply ?

where can i pick up a sky+ box? (fook sky im not going to them they were charging me like 150)

i was thinking of picking one up on ebay, is there any shops that sell them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 499 ✭✭MACHEAD

Have a look on e-bay (.ie and .co.uk), as well as private sellers auctioning their old sky boxes, there should be 'e-bay shops' offering surplus stock at bargain prices. I don't remember the name of the shop where I got mine but I remember it was offered at a 'buy it now' price or best offer. From memory I think I offered 20 quid less than the buy it now price and they accepted it! And they sent a quad lnb into the bargain.

hi, i have just got sky plus box in and working fine , problem is that i want to use my old standard box for multiroom but it wont read the sky card , card has been paired to box, but seems reader is faulty or worn out. sky want 100 euro + parts to send an engineer to sort it, is there anyone else out there that would do this as a nixer , tks

Pick up a second hand box on adverts or buy and sell, easiest and cheapest option.

http://www.tvtrade.ie/satellite-receivers/sky-boxes.html Remember folks you can use a HD box simply as a SKY+ box-if you're ringing Sky to pair the card with it just tell them it's SKY+ box.

I thought only premium channels are paired?
There is another thread on this already.

Half right there Watty-if you want to use the recording features of sky+ the card will have to be paired with the box.It will display any channel you are subscribed to EXCEPT premium channels if you put a card from one box into another.
