Hi ive been living in the north for the past 4 years earning a good living selling cars, in april last year i was let go due to the impending recession and since then have been living off my savings while looking for work.

My problem is that i dont have any official qualifications apart from my leaving cert so really a salesman is all i have ever trained to do but no1 is hiring sales people atall.. I have also applied for lower income jobs with no sucess, one company told me they didnt hire me because of the drop in wages i would be getting that i wouldnt stick at the job for any length of time..

Anyway my savings are all but gone now so i have moved back to my parents house in the republic where i grew up and went to school and also worked from before moving to the north.

Can anyone tell me if i am entitled to any benefits in the republic atall considering its been 4 years since i worked down here? and also can you give me an idea how much id be entitled to as a single man living with his parents? I have never signed on north or south of the border at any stage..

Signing on is something i have managed to avoid for nearly a year now and its not something im proud of but there are no jobs out there at the minute so its time to swallow my pride and do it...

Any help would be greatly appriciated!

As far as I understand it, you will be entitled to Jobseekers Allowance which will be means tested. (Unlike Jobseekers benefit).

If you are under 25 they will take in to account "Benefit and privelage" - i.e. the benefit you get by living with your parents. If you are 25 or over, they will not take this into account.
