I remember hearing a young pro who'd just qualified from Q-School joking that a veteran player had said to him: "Congratulations, you've just won the right to spend stg£50,000 playing golf for a year..."

Not sure on the costs because I guess it depends on where they travel to and where they stay etc... but to retain their card last year, they had to make in excess of €220,000 in prizemoney

    You'd have to be talking:-

    Flights €500'ish
    Accomodation €700-10000'ish
    Caddy €750'ish
    Misc €500'ish

Thats €2500-€2800 for each tournament just to break even, I suppose if anyone knows Paul McGinley, he should just about know, now a days..

They really on sponsors alot. I remember hearing a couple of years ago players were getting around a grand a week to use TM clubs. The strange thing about it was a lot of pros where using TM clubs.

But it is not cheap playing on the tour.

    ouch again!!!
€500 misc per week :D just thinkin how i could explain this to my accountant

appreciate the effort on the breakdown
but i guess their is a lot of other costs like medical and coaching and a lot of other things

just was wondering if anyone had came across a figure that was generally accepted as making the whole (ad)venture worthwile on the monetary terms

I remember Setanta Golf did a thing last October on their guess as to what a particular player earned for endorsements (a low ranked player i.e. in the 100-150 on the money list). What I can recall is that a hat sponsorship would earn $500 p.w., if he finished top 10/20 or something it would rise to $2500

I wouldn't worry about an accountant if you were only breaking even, thats one expense you could avoid..

I didn't mean 'ouch' to the cost, I meant 'ouch' to the "ask Paul McGinley" comment... very caustic :D
I'd say that costs are very high and anyone just about retaining their card is making a good living but nothing extraordinary... especially considering what would be in store for them if they lose the card.

i think everybody underdstood the "ouch" was aimed at PmcG

As has been said above, Roughly 3k will need to be earned to cover the costs of each tournament.

However to cover the costs of the year they'd to earn an extra 3k a tournament to cover the costs of Mortgages, Cars, Children, Wives, food on weeks when they arent playing, Management company costs, Coaches, etc. The 250k required to retain the card for a player and the sponsorship deals will allow them to live comfortably but nothing over the top.
