I mean come on! It was a terrible movie to begin with, a great cast squandered on a poor script. I know he stole most of the scenes he was in but lord think of all the other supporting performances that might have been rewarded with a nomination. I can think of four of the top of my head

Brendan Gleeson or Colin Farrell, In Bruges (Both Excellent)
Ricky Gervais Ghostown-(One of the better comedys this year)
    Aaron Eckhart-The Dark Knight

I really liked him in this. I wasn't a huge fan of the office but i though extras was classic.

Hmm, you know? It's an odd one...

Now, I really liked Tropic Thunder, and Robert Downey Jr certainly stole the show, but I wouldn't have expected it to get an nomination. The only think I can think of, is that it's a token nomination for Robert, because he is a staggeringly good actor yet didn't get any nominations for Zodiac or A Scanner Darkly. So I guess this is the academy's way of recognising him?

I think a lot of the RDJ buzz was down to the "Oh my God, he's black!" rather than his actual performance, which is more an achievement for the makeup department than RDJ himself.
TBH I taught RDJ's performance was a lot better in Iron Man than in Tropic Thunder (yeah, I know it was a lead as opposed to a support).

I thought RDJ was very good in Tropic Thunder, the movie was really meh but he gave a great performance. It was on par with Heath Ledger's Joker*

    May not be true

He's the dude playing the dude that’s disguised as another dude

Cruise got a Best Supporting Golden Globe nomination for this movie also.

I like RDJ he was overlooked by the Academy for Zodiac and A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints and he is great in Tropic Thunder. He has been getting as much buzz as Ledger (who will win).

For me Danny McBride was top in Tropic Thunder

I think the nominations are filler so that Heath Ledger is a shoe in.....the others can be assured of an opportunity to figure in the Academy awards again where Ledger never will (well...maybe one more shot)......I think the nominations are there so no one will be shocked when a cartoon character wins.

Although Robert Downey Jr is awesome in even the most mundane sh1te.

I think he should get the nom. When I watched him in Tropic Thunder I was convinced he was a talented actor, whereas I cannot say this is the case for anything else I've ever seen him in.

That was me. Yeah, i suppose he was pretty much playing himself. i guess that's why he looked so comfortable.

RDJ doesnt have a hope of an oscar for this role. I agree that the rest of the nominations are filler for Heath Ledger's Joker.

RDJ has a movie coming out shortly called the Soloist, and that's bound to be in the running for next years Oscars if the trailer is anything to go by. Really excited about this movie: http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount/thesoloist/
