Ryanair Ski/Boot Rules

    Hi all

Travelling shortly from Dublin to Turin on Ryanair as part of a skiing trip. Never did a ski flight with Ryanair before so a little nervous of falling foul of their labytrinthine set of rules & regs on baggage allowances etc. Have a few questions that you guys might be able to help with...:

    1. When you pay for ski carriage (€30 each way) does it mean they take your skis AND boots as part of the ski carriage?
    2. Can you put in a pair of short blades with your skis or pad it out with some socks and jocks...?
    3. Has anyone noticed if they have been cracking down on the weight of the carry-on bag? Will they really hit you for 10kg???

    Thanks a million

    Kevin

Don't know about the ski thing, but recently they have been cracking down on the size and weight of cabin luggage. My sister was told in Turin that her carry-on bag was too big and she'd have to check it.

Generally, they don't care what is in the bag (extra blades etc) as long as it fits in their weight or size restrictions.

I brought boots on a carry on bag 2 weeks ago. No problem with boots but all carry on bags were weighed at check-in.

Of course, if you can manage to get everything into your carry-on bag, you can do on-line check in, so the Ryanair staff don't get to weigh your bag.

This is not strictly true, I went through Karlsruhe recently and Ryanair had the security staff at the x-ray machines doing their carry-on weighting for them. They were sending people back to check in if they any more than 10kgs. There was a lot of very annoyed people on that plane.

Geez, I might. I could get my boots in under the weight, but they are a very awkward size, so it's hard to get the right bag. And I have odd feet, one of my boots has been blown to make it comfortable, so I'd rather not hire.

There's a thread somewhere, either in Commuting & Transport or Aviation, reporting that Ryanair are (thankfully IMO) at last beginning to clamp down on the hand baggage restrictions, both in terms of size and weight. It was beginning to get rather silly with people carrying on bags that took up almost an entire luggage bin on their own.

all depends on who u get really, we went to glasgow sat mrn, i checked in on line, we had 1 piece of hand luggage between us, came home sunday mrn, again had pre checked in on line, but in glasgow we were not let tru coz the said hand luggage was 2 big! it was exact same bag and there was nothing extra in it at all , had to check in the bag, and 1 of us had to check in with it, as you cant check in bag on its own , cost us £28.50 there. dont really understand it coz we got tru with it in dublin
our bag was weighed in glasgow and was below 10kg, but seemingly the size was wrong!!
    just be carefull with ryanair

Thanks for all the tips guys.

I gave the Ryanair Reservation Line one last go and got through at last after only a minute....! And in fairness to them, talked to a very helpful woman (i know.....I was shocked too.....).

Anyway, I was told (and she checked with her supervisor on this one as I was adopting a belt and braces approach..) that Skis and Poles and Boots are all covered when you book 1 ski carriage. Initially she said that they all had to be in one bag but, after checking (when i pointed out that i had enormous feet:eek:), she told me that it was also fine if you tied your boot bag and ski bag together..

So there you go, hopefully it will be that straightforward at the airport...... (i've written an attendance note on the entire conversation in case i have to get legal with them!!).

    Hope that helps everyone.

Recently flew through Bristol and they had weighing scales at the departure gate and were using them for some, but not all, bags. Few people were forced to check their bag, some very angry faces coming home:eek:

I think it depends on their mood / the airport. I've had my own boots for a few years now & there seams to be a different policy every time I take them on Ryanair. You might get them on as hand luggage or they might make you check them. I just book them in now when I'm booking the flight to be sure...
