Whenever I listen to say RHCP or Smashing Pumpkins I find the mix is really choked. Its not pleasant. Any reasons for this, I remember once someone telling me it was due to compression.

I'm not sure its that, the vocals in this and the guitars sound "pushed back"

You Tube is never going to be a fair representation of the original recording. What are you listening on?

Ipod/tv. I notice this with RCHP on Stadium Arcadium, there is very little "space" on the record, not as in reverb, but its the same "pushed back" treatment, every instrument is tightly compacted like there isn't much room to breathe.

If you want to get a quick picture of how much compression used load up the waveform of the track in question with something you know to be very open and not slammed, visually comparing them. It'll becoming pretty obvious the difference between the two.

This won't give you many clues to the mix techniques used but that's what those ugly things on the side of your head are for! :)
