Was a big fan of the manga (one of the first that I read) So finding the anime had me very thrilled.

After watching a few episodes I am a bit mixed.

Visually it looks spot on, even if the violence is toned down a bit.

The plot also seems to be very close to the original manga the only major change is that all the chapters from 7-12 in the manga have been shoved forward to run parallel to the opening chapters.

Which makes sense seeing as those chapters were very heavy on introducing whole new groups and characters and changing the direction of the manga.

Now these characters are appearing in the background of the stories of the initial stories. It sort of works, in that its only if you've read the manga does it feel out of place.

It also makes sense to do this as if its an anime with a 26 episode run, it would be very difficult to get the whole series in and chapters 7-12 are actually very easy to break down and spread among other chapters as Manji (the main character) is not the focus of the plot for the most part.

Where the anime goes wrong is in 2 areas.

firstly as a matter of personal taste the music is not very fitting, it tends to overpower alot of the scenes or just feel out of place.

Secondly and more importantly some of the characters seem very off how they should be, especially Manji. The original Manga both in its translation and in its original version had a focus on presenting Edo period Japan with a sort of casual dialogue and down to earth tones, Samurai Champloo sort of hit on this a couple of years back and almost got it spot on (in some cases it might have gone too far) and Mugen in that was actually quite similar to Manji in the manga.

Sadly the anime has made Manji a much more serious character less include to shout and berate people and overall less of scoundral which is a real shame because that was the appeal of the manga, having this almost han solo like samurai.

The other characters sound right for the most part, but the subtitling might be off because the dialogue doesnt read like the manga. they all sound much more uptight then they did in the manga which is again a big shame.

Overall though I'll keep watching because really it will be when the anime covers chapters 5 and 6 that it will be made or broken and hopefully the character of manji will roughen up a bit more by then.
