Problem with a toshiba tv

I'm new to this forum, so not sure if it's the right place, so feel free to move if there's a better place....
My problem is with a Toshiba 21V53G tv - it has a flatscreen but is a crt rather than plasma or lcd. It's my mother's tv, so here's what I've been told. She turned it on one morning and for no apparent reason there's now an arch across the top of the screen where the colour is gone wrong. (She's not the most tech-ie person, so when she mentioned it to me on the phone, I assumed she'd changed the colour settings unintentionally.) Anyway after seeing it for myself, I now think it is a problem with the tv as I've tried changing all the colour settings and there's been no change.....the fact that it's arch shaped heightens my suspicion.
So I guess my question is - has anyone had this problem? Can it be fixed & how much? Or is it just going to get worse? Any help greatfully appreciated

I suspect that the problem you are describing is usuall called "pincushion", although it's not possible to be definite about this without seeing it and it's an age since I had fun with CRT tvs.

This is not a problem that can be fixed diy - it usually requires either replacement of components inside the tv or internal adjustment. If you want it fixed you need a qualified repair person to deal with it.

CRT tvs have lethal voltages and you shouldn't EVER mess around inside the back of them unless you're qualified to repair them.

If you've got a local tv repair place (getting rarer these days) you could ask if it is worth repairing.

I'm moving this question to Video Displays section for ant further comments or suggestions.

Happened a friend of mine before when he put a speaker on top of the TV (although obviously I don't know if thats what directly caused the problem).

I'm not sure exactly how he went about fixing it (or if he even did) but i think the problem your having could be something magnet-related?

Although im really not very informed on the whole TV technology deal, so im sure there'll be better help to follow.

Is the colour gone wrong on the whole screen? if so sounds like the tube has gone/ is going if it occasionally comes back. If its the tube, it's not worth fixing.

Happened me a few weeks ago when I was moving the TV and also had put a speaker on top of the TV

You need to plug it out from the wall a couple of times for an hour or so and the TV should reset itself

Thanks guys - It's only the top of the screen & there's a dvd player and chorus box on top of the tv, so might try moving them and see if that has any effect. The tv is plugged out every night, so that shouldn't be a problem.

The ritz - don't worry I have no intention of opening it up or attempting to fix it myself - I know my limitations. If it needs to be opened, it will be going to someone who (hopefully) knows what they're doing.

DVD & chorus box would not cause the dis-colouring effect, it is the magnet in a speaker that would cause the problem.
