Thinking of buying a 1997 Mini Cooper. What should I look out for?

    Hi folks

I've seen a lovely looking 1997 Mini Cooper for sale and I'm very tempted to buy it. The thing is I've no idea what I should check when I have a close look at it.

I'd be very grateful for any advice on any issues with Minis of that age or particular problems to look out for.

    Thanks.

rust, unfortunately is a major issue.

everywhere, really but particularly on the subframe and its connection to the body.

everything else is usually repairable at reasonable cost

Plug for my own forum, try looking around miniclub.ie - the same question has been asked many many times, and there's been plenty of good advice given there. There are a few Mini specialists on the site too who are more than happy to give out free advice in the hopes that down the road you'll bring your car to them for servicing, bodywork, etc!

Look for rust! Check the door sills in particular but also look at the bottom of the doors and the boot floor and also the front window sill...some of the places that have been troublesome on our one!!

oil leaks, crunching second gear, wheel bearings especially if it is a Sport, engine mounts, rear subframe, rust everywhere, radiator leaked very early on mine. if it is a UK Mini it will probably be perforated with rust by now even though they look after their cars better than the Irish do. Rust on Minis is frightening: it takes hold and won't let go.

i agree 110 % nothing is as expensive to fix on a mini....

everything else on it is exchangeable/upgradeable

    Thanks all.

I'll give it a close inspection for rust.
