Hi folks, thinking of buying a 04/05 berlingo van.just want to know is the non turbo verson a better buy than the HDI model.i heard from a few people that the standard 1.9 is a better van(gives less trouble).i know the HDI is probabaly a better van to drive but i dont want problems. Also some ads stste engine size as 1.6 and others as 2.0 ,which is the best one to go for?

I had a Hdi Berlingo and thought it was a great van.
You have a van without having to sacrafice acceleration and speed.
I had a lend of a VW Cadddy for a while and I found this to be slightly better than the Berlingo but I think it may cost more.
From what I know the Hdi is an excellent engine.
I think it's the same one that's in the Peugot 406 but don't take that as gospel.

As far as i know you won't get a 1.9 in a 04 on. The hdi was know for shredding its pump internals if not looked after. A turbo is always going to add an extra complication over a straight diesel. Again you won't know how the previous owner treated the turbo i.e did they drive it hard from cold, did they let it idle for a minute before the shut down.
The older 1.9 engine was a very solid engine only weak points were that it could do its head gasket, so coolant must be changed and levels watched. From 96/97 on the crank was altered on these engines to enable it to pass increasing restrictive fuel emmissions. This weakened the engine. What happened to the 1.9 engine after this point and its retirement I am unaware of.

My own opinion is the hdi is a cracking engine if bought with a detailed service history and maintained afterwards.

I have a 04 1.9 its really lacking power so if I was you I would get the HDi. I really like it though and it has all the extras. I have it about a year now and it hasn't given any serious trouble just routine stuff but as I said it's seriously lacking power so definetley get the HDi.

Yes, both HDi, also the 2.0 HDi was used in the 406. very underrated engine. I had one and it was brilliant. Just get a well cared for one !

Xsara van used the old 1.4 HDI as seen on the 307. the HDI on the Berlingo was 1.6 - personally I'd only go for the HDI as long as it's been looked after and you find the 1.9 too slow.
