    Hi,
My 1996 Corolla with 86,000 miles is due an NCT and also a new timing belt. I've been quoted €450-500 for the timing belt and water pump. Is this what they cost? It seems alot to spend considering the age of the car but I'd be afraid to do the NCT without changing it. Maybe I should consider changing the car? It hasn't given me any other problems over the years, just a new battery and sump. Any advice? Thanks

Well the job is the same regardless of the age of the car. You don't need to have the timing belt done to get it through an NCT but you'd be well advised to get it done because if it breaks, the cost involved in sorting it out will be 2-3 times the cost of replacing the belt...

Price seems a bit harsh :o

AFAIK you dont need to change the water pump while doing the timing belt on nearly all Toyotas as its not driven by it.

Does seem a bit high, but as Mama Harney says, "Shop around"!

    €450 seems a bit steep.
I wouldn't like to pay anything over €300 for that work.

I recently had the belt done on a Passat and it cost under €300
and as far as I know there's more work involved in doing that job
on a Passat as the belt is right up against the radiator and is awkward
    to get to.

On a car that age you'd be better off going to a local,
recommended mechanic as opposed to say a dealership.
