Trying to decide between these two cars

I will get the focus for about 2,600 but the Golf says there is no room for negotiating. Both cars are good to drive both clean on the inside.

    Any advice?

Both cars are worth just over a grand. Dont bother with either. Its a buyers market, get yourself a 3 series diesel for the same money and year

If I had to pick I'd choose the Golf.
However, I'd tend to agree with the OP and buy neither.

Go up North and get yourself a real bargain, especially somewhere like Traynor's auctions in Portadown...

Both are painfully slow and I wouldn't willingly choose either, however given the choice of either one for free I'd take the Focus, better spec and more comfortable.

Thanks for all the advice so far, I wont be doing much mileage probably only about 5k miles per year, I'm not really in need of a car but would like to get one.

Would a gargae up north guarantee the car will pass the NCT?

Well, buying from a private seller or from an auction you wouldn't really have any comeback if it fails the NCT.
However if you buy from a reputable garage you should be able to reach
an agreement whereby if your car fails the NCT that they will repair
whatever it fails on, just get something in writing.

This is how alot of dealers of Japanese Import cars operate.

If you go to the revenue.ie website there is an online calculator there
which will allow you to work out exactly how much VRT you will have
to pay to import the vehicle.

Regarding insurance, in the past I've imported cars and the insurance companies have insured the car off the chassis number until it is registered in the South.

Importing a car into Ireland is surprisingly quick and easy.
Just turn up at your local county council office's VRT dept. with the car, the vehicle's registration document, ID and some money.
They'll issue you with some documentation and your new reg number on the spot, you can even pick which county letters you want.

After importing the car you'll have to fill in a form and send it to the NCT offices, the purpose of this is to register the vehicle on the NCT system (usually takes a week or two.
Only after the car is registered on there system can you apply for a NCT.

Thanks AT, I looked at getting a more expensive car from the UK but in these times I dont want to have a massive car loan hanging over me.

Will keep an eye out for some bargains up north!

Sorry, in an earlier post I mentiond Traynor's car auctions in Portadown.
I meant to say, Wilson's car auctions, I confused them with the scrap yard.

www.wilsonsauctions.com/ you should be able to get listings from their website or by fax.

They've got a huge yard you're sure to find something that suits.

A good trick is to wander around the yard and try to find cars that you like that aren't listed on that night's auction.
If you have a word with a member of staff they'll call out the car you're interested in.
As it's not listed most people won't pay any attention to it and won't bid against you.

Can you imagine the OP's face if he arrived up to Traynors to view the "stock". He'd love you for the advice A_T :D

lol, yes the sales technique would certainly be interesting, one careful owner?
It's such a shame when you see all the crashed Ferraris, Astons, etc that Traynors have up on the front rack that you can see from the road, such a waste.

OP - Given what you've said, you might do worse than to go and offer €2,500 for this: http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=1301615

Of the two mentioned by the OP I would go for the Focus, it is much nicer to drive than the Golf and probably more reliable. Both 1.4 litre engines are sluggish.

Regarding the NCT, get the dealer to NCT the car first as part of any sale. It's a buyer's market so you can afford to be picky.

Really want a 1.6 with those.

If your after something modern, you can pick up this 05/06 Lancers very cheap. As reliable as you can get and comfortable.

06 here with really low milage which you would get for under 8000e.

Thanks for the advice so far folks, I'm looking at spending at most 3K and keeping it under a 1.4 as I already have a 1.8 vectra

If you want an unreliable, slow yoke, go for it OP.

Bring a mechanic with you, I have went to see Golf's before ( 97-00 ) and they were bangers, but looked very nice.

    98 1.4 Golf = 1250
    99 1.4 Focus = 1400

Do not pay more, as more reliable japs like Civic, Lancer, Accord etc can be had for that.

The Terios is to cars as wellies are to shoes - much better for mud, much worse for tarmac.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 21,706 Mod ✭✭✭✭helimachoptor

Have done some reading of reviews and will not be buying a terios!!
