Hey all, Im thinking about changing the internal hd in my ps3, its only a 40gb ,which i bought last may, since then they have upgraded to 80 or 160 gb even.

I was wondering could someone tell me info on which hardrive i should put in.

I want to put in a 1tb, I was looking at this one , I want to know if this is compatiable with the ps3 and would 7200 rpm be suitable for the ps3 or would 5400 rpm be better for the ps3.

    http://www.dabs.ie/productview.aspx?quicklinx=4ZTT&InMerch=1

It doesnt say on it that its ps3 compatabile.

This one does though ,its 5200 rpm and 400gb

Wont work as a 3.5" disk is too big, you can only use a 2.5" SATA hard drive with the PS3, One Here which could be used for example

The first one definitely isn't compatible it's too big (it's a3.5" drive you need a 2.5" drive). The highest capacity 2.5" drive at the moment is 500GBs.

Bought a new 320 gig hard drive yesterday for my 40 gig PS3here for a good price .

Already have a WD 320 gig hard drive in my 60 gig PS3 and I find that to be plenty of extra space for my needs.

Thanks for the messages guys, i didnt know 3.5 inch hard drive didnt work on ps3,
That 320gb looks nice, but i think il go for 500 gb if i can ,So 2.5 inch drives dont go past 500 gb? kinda sucks :(

just seen this about speed , interesting.

If anyone finds a cheap 500gb hardrive let me know ,thanks.

Nope, 500Gig is the max size for 2.5" SATA drives on market at current

the screwdriver size for the drive is PZ0 ,if you use a standard philips it will round out the head.

heres one ,it's even colour coded to match the drive:)

Probably about €12 I'd say. Just add it to the cart and see how much delivery comes up at.

Can anyone tell me for sure if a 7200rpm is too fast for a ps3? I mean I know it will work but I heard something unsubstantiated a while ago about them producing more heat than a 5400rpm and having SOME kind of negative effect.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 837 ✭✭✭CutzEr

Well it would probably heat up slightly quicker..

I've a 7200rpm drive and it's fine ,not sure if the drive is even near anything that would cause problems.

I think a 7.2k drive means that your ps3 runs about 9c hotter.
Remember flaccus on here doing loads of those little tests on it and tbh it just wasn't worth putting in the 7.2k for the extra noise and the speed increase was neglible.
I've a 500GB 5.4K drive in mine and it works flawlessly for games and for HD 720P movies..on probs whatsoever.

Also a word of warning- Make sure and download the latest PS3 firmware update to your PC (if that's the version on your ps3) and copy it to a FAT32 formatted memory stick within a folder called x:\PS3\UPDATE\ where X is your memory stick. Last few updates are bigger than the onboard flash ram and require an external source to copy it and it also stores it on the hard drive as well. You might not need it but just in case you do..
eg housemate bought 60GB PS3..had to use the memory stick to format the 500gb drive.
Mine I increased from 320GB to 500Gb and it didn't look for any update..just formatted the drive straighaway.

I don't think this is necessary as I installed a new HDD recently. I went from 60gb to 500gb and all I had to do was backup my old HDD on an external HDD and then restore it once I had put the new drive in.

I also had to get the firmware when I switched from 40GB to a 160GB disc - I used a DVD though. But the hard disk wouldn't start formatting before the firmware update was installed. And there was no way to do that on the PS3.

    So that's good advice.

Going to install this today or tomorrow, This is prob a stupid Q ,but Do i have to make sure the hd is fat32 ,or does the ps3 just automatically format it to fat32 after i install it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,585 ✭✭✭✭guil

it should format it itself unless ya have the same problem flaccus got when he changed his hd

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,283 ✭✭✭Glico Man

Yeah, as said above by guil07, it should format itself. But if not then just load up the PS3, go to system settings and choose Format Utility.

That should do it if it doesn't format it automatically.

no sometimes the ps3 wont even start unless the firmware is loaded on the new hd

It would be pretty hard to get the firmware already on a new HDD. You would need to install the HD into a laptop and install it then and then take it out and put into the PS3. I think Sony would have thought that this would create a lot of hassle.

You are able to download the firmware updates to a PC and transfer it onto your PS3 if you don't have an internet connection from the Playstation3 website
