OK this is going to seem a bit mad, hopefully someone can help. I google search found me many people with the same problem yet none of the searches resulted in a fix.

Im having wifi issues with my iPhone 3g on my home network. Let me try summarise it as best i can.

When i connect to the network at home, it automatically assigns an IP address that is unrelated to my network. It also populates the Subnet mask with an address that is also unrelated. I cant however browse the net (getting a "Server not responding" error message)

I have input the internet details manually and after a minute the Wifi icon appears as if connected but i get the Server not responding message too.

I have connected to public wifi spots so i know the wifi is working. The phone is new and it hasnt been dropped etc.

THe network is iphone unfriendly as before my previous (unlocked) original iphone went on a journey down the loo, it worked fine with my home network.

Apple tech support couldnt help me. As my home network is catering for a home office setup, i have an IT guy who does network stuff. He gave me the static settings to input but alas no joy. He also cant understand why the iphone not connecting.

I have tried resetting everything etc etc. Im using OS 2.2.

Here are some other people who are having similar problems just so you know Im not going mad!

Anyone have any brainwaves? Its driving me mad! Thanks!

Encryption type? If you remove encryption does it work then?

Forgive my ignorance, my IT skills are limited! :o

    How do I do that?

If you have no access to the admin settings for the network yourself, it's going to be a bit more difficult as you'll probably have to get the IT guy to try suggestions for you, like Aidan's one to disable encryption. Most routers simply have an admin page (like 192.168.1.1) that you can access via any browser, enter the admin user name and password and configure settings from there. Apple AirPort Extreme and Express units are configured via the AirPort Utility instead of a web interface.

I'd try Aidan's suggestion of disabling encryption first - there might also be MAC filtering enabled on the router and you need to add your new iPhone's MAC address to the list of allowed clients. The strange IP settings simply indicate your phone isn't properly getting an address over DHCP but there could be a number of reasons for that.

faceman my iphone and my daughter's ipod touch connect to my wifi perfectly.

How friday night, I J*ilbroke my other daughther's ipod touch (she uses her nano now) just to see what they're like and 5 mins before I broke it, it connected to my network without issue, soon as I broke it, wifi will not connect whatever I try, now I run my own mac support company and if it baffled me it's not a simple fix, although in saying that I didn't spend to much time looking into it. And to be honest I wouldn't be calling apple support about an unlocked iphone you're effectively voiding the warranty when you jailbreak em.

I got this resolved by connecting to iphone to a different internet connection at home via a seperate router. works fine now. Weird!

There are a number of possibilities for this but I would imagine your iPhone is having trouble getting an IP address (from the DHCP server integrated in your router) so it is using APIPA ... something like 169.254.x.x , are you getting an IP like that?
