I'm not sure this is the right place for this but my computer has failed to start up. The following thing appeared.
    Checking file system on C:
The type of the file system is NTFS.
    The volume is dirty.

CHKDSK is verifying files (stage 1of 3)...
    File verification completed.
CHKDSK is verifying indexes (stage 2 of 3)...
    0 percent completed

Its been like that an hour now. Any suggestions??

Did you try booting up in safe mode?

Is it a Seagate(DiamondMax 22 or Barracuda) by any change?

I did but it won't. When I enter set-up(F2) it just opens up something I've never seen before, a kind of filing system that has all the options and info it and no way to select safe mode or anything of the sort.

Not a clue:confused:. I probably should've added that I have no clue about most things techno.

100% on verifying files but won't go past 0% on verifying indexes. its just over 2 years old. I'm due an upgrade but i'm more worried about losing files I haven't backed up.

I'd take the hard drive out of the case and use a different machine to back up your files to be safe.

If you have a Windows disc you could then try booting to it and entering the recovery console and enter chkdsk /r to try repair any errors that the file system may have.

A lot of the time when CHKDSK starts to appear randomly it means the Hard Drive is on it's way out. Do you hear a ticking or any other noise coming from the PC that you haven't heard before?

I'd honestly be happy to get the files off it and **** it in the bin then. I think I'll just ask the IT guy in work to do it as a nixer for me. I'm clueless about anything hardware related.
