had the car serviced yesterday...Its a 02 focus..onthe report he said that the Clutch is worn and about to go...he said it could be a month or could be a year.

will there be any tell tale signs when it is about to happen? It costs around 500 euro to replace is this price also ok?

I had this happen on my last car. What I noticed was the clutch slipping and difficulty enagaging gears. That's alot for a new clutch, ring around some other garages for quotes.

If you have problems changing gear or if you smell something burning get down to a garage right away.

It depends on the car but happened me last year cost €450, but I'd never use that garage again as 6 months later it happened again. :(

That's actually cheap for a Focus clutch. Your car has a clutch that is operated by a concentric slave cylinder that has to be replaced at the same time as the clutch and costs around 100 Euro, on top of the clutch kit which is probably around 150 Euro.

If i remember correctly a slave cylinder went in a Focus i sold a few months back... If i remember correctly it cost alot more than €100 to put right.

Funny i had that cylinder replaced yesterday as there was a leak on it...it was only when i went to pick up the car that he mentioned the worn clutch...he should have called me when the mechanic discovered it and maybe i would have gotten both done together.

If i have to get that cylinder replaced again as well then Im gonna go mental.

As far as I know, on all Ford Focus's or at least on any that I've done clutches on, the slave cylinder (concentric slave cylinder), is in the engine bell housing with the clutch, which means the gearbox, etc, has to come out to get at it. So you'd be basically looking at a clutch change in terms of the labour content to resolve this. Also, if the cylinder has been leaking, usually the hydraulic clutch fluid would have contaminated the clutch disc linings so you'd have to replace the whole clutch as well. To be honest, if I was taking out a gearbox and replacing a CSC (Concentric Slave Cylinder), I'd always replace the clutch, it's false economy to go in there and leave a half worn clutch in there that can become a problem within a year or two and require the same job to be done all over again...

I'd be very surprised if a mechanic changed a CSC and put the gearbox back in and didn't tell you that the clutch needed to be changed, before putting the gearbox back in. Unless your car doesn't have a CSC but an old type clutch slave cylinder that is outside the engine/gearbox area, and I haven't seen this set up on a Ford Focus before. What year and engine size is your Focus and I'll check it for you???

I'm just remembering the clutch was done as well. €750 by Ford for the lot if i remember correctly.

Yeah as far as I can establish here, your car has a CSC/Concentric Slave Cylinder. How much were you charged for this to be replaced???

I can't for the life of me think of a reason why a mechanic would take out your gearbox to change a CSC and leave a worn clutch in there and put the gearbox back in again, without giving you the option of replacing the clutch while he had the gearbox out??? Are you sure it was the Clutch Slave Cylinder he replaced???

Usually as a mechanic you'd have to cover yourself and price in a clutch replacement anyway as they are usually contaminated in oil if the CSC has been leaking... I'd more or less insist on replacing a clutch when doing a CSC replacement because best practice is replacing a whole 3 piece clutch kit together to prevent any issues down the road...

Yeah that sounds about right for a main dealer.

Just had a look at the Invoice again.
It says replaced the clutch Master Cylinder. my apologies.

just wondering is it is even worth replacing it now at that cost.

I never replaced a master cylinder on a Focus, it's usually the slave cylinder that leaks... I wouldn't worry about the clutch until it starts slipping or you have trouble getting gear...

    I had a 205 with clutch problem,

firstly it started to slip at 3 gear, then more and eventually you barely could drive the car because clutch was slipping so badly.

Maybe 5k I was able to drive, but then the clutch was gone.
