Vinny Murray Cup

Actually I don't care who Vinnie Murray is but how is the competition for the cup that bears his name structured and how does it feed into the senior cup?

Do the winners/semi finalists of this year's VM qualify for this year's Leinster Senior Cup or next year's? And on what criteria do you qualify for the School's Cup proper without having to play in the Vinnie Murray?

    Ditto for Father Godfrey.

If anyone could enlighten me I'd be grateful. I never played schools rugby, and I haven't a clue how it's organised. I tried Googling for an explanation but couldn't find any.

Could you change the title please of this thread and show a bit more respect for Vinnie Murray, who was a priest, teacher and rugby coach in Clongowes - and certainly a great inspiration for Gordon D'Arcy.

The man died of cancer in his 50s a couple of years ago.
This interview with Gordon D'Arcy from a few years back will show how influential Vinnie Murray was on him. It includes the story about Warran Gatland inviting Gordon to tour with Ireland in SA (which he declined to sit his Leaving Cert).

The competition itself is a route into the senior cup proper. The man is highly respected deceased coach of Clongowes who is adored by everyone I know from CWC.

Section B schools play a league compeition pre christmas in which if a team gets to the semis they qualify, the rest go into the Vinny Murray alongside qualifiers from lower sections. Certain schools sometimes abandon the league compeition early onwards if they have lost a game or if they have injuries ect and just go to the Vinny Murray. Gonzaga won it last year, CBC have won it a couple of times and Kings Hos too I think.

Section B is a mess imo. The best schools in it-Gonzaga, CBC, Newbridge, Kilkenny, Gerrads, Roscrea and Andrews are hamstrung by it imo. It needs an overhaul big time. Some of the scores in the league are laughable on occasion because certain schools are getting worse whilst others are getting far better.

Father Godfrey I think it was actually in Rock. Nurtured some of the best talent in Irish rugby' history there.

If you don't care who he is at least please show him the respect he deserves. Whilst you may know nothing about the man, he is deceased.
Vinnie influenced a great many people not just in Clongowes but also in his capacity as Irish Schools coach.
D'arcy still rates him as the greatest coach he ever had with all due respect to all of his previous coaches.
Anyone who came in contact with the man can testify to his greatness, and even after nine years his loss is felt.

Whilst you may not have intended to offend, I am obliged to respond having known the man and been coached by him. And whilst I have no means to bring one about, I would be appreciative if you could reword your original post.

agree 100% - brilliant article, what he achieved and still achieves at Clongowes is phenomanal - Clongowes with small numbers are always competive , defying the odds - and I've yet to meet someone with a bad word about d'arcy - in the era of the super-star - he's still human

Thread title changed to actually get some real responses, as opposed to people just purely spazzing out about it.

as far as I know it is another mid-ranking comp for schools, of which there seams to be too many - the league and cup should suffice - and maybe one for small and emerging schools - clongowes themselves would be smaller than many of the teams competing in it - probably a little hard on Snickers , it just didn't read good

Whilst I appreciate the changing of the title, I'm not sure if the reason behind it is particularly apt for a moderator. I wanted the change of title as a mark of respect, but unfortunately that is not now possible.

Well, if you have a problem with it, feel free to post here http://www.boards.ie/vbullet/forumdisplay.php?f=30 - its the best place to give forum feedback, if you feel i was out of line. As per usual, no feedback will be allowed on thread, and I will be reasonably strict on it. The original post concerns the Vinny Murray Cup, and i'd prefer to see it relating to that, rather than it being about how people feel about the OP who didn't know who he was.

The news that Vinnie was a priest will come as a shock to his wife.
