.IE Domain names are always pricey 20 -> 90 quid depending on who you go to.

Blacknight are currently running a deal on .ie domain names so get yours today :D

Offer is from midnight till midnight tonight

    Use the code iefridayjan09

    http://www.blacknight.com/

(I know there is normally a ban on hosting talk in the web dev forum .. this isn't however hosting but domain names an I think its a pretty cool offer and I'll be making use later on)

They had this two weeks ago.

Works out at 12.15 incl VAT for a year. Definitely worth it.

    Yeah, great offer.

Got myname.ie during the last offer. Just had to fax in a utility bill after the reg process.

Always debating doing that don't know if I'd do anything with it though (I've got too many domains) :D

Excellent deal alright, what's the story with transferring domains with this?

Tempted by this, but don't know much about it.

So, why would I get a .ie rather than a .com?
Is there any difference? Apart from the bit at the end :)

I think it worked on transfers last time you'll have to ask them though

    My advice get both.

Whats your market ? ireland ? get the .ie ...

Protect your brand ... (If its for a business definitely get both)
If its a personal domain ... I'd probably say get the .com and if you can afford it ... get both :D

It's a personal domain, so don't think I need both.
The .ie costs €10, the .com costs €6.25. Think I'll go with the .com, or am I missing something with the cost?

for my personal site I've a .com ... I don't see any need to get the .ie for it :)

If its personal ... and you're happy enough that someone could eventually take the .ie ... just get the .com :) (of course you could say the same about .eu .net .org and so on)

availability on .ie's is usually greater than with .coms though ... so that can be one advantage.

Really though its up to you at the end of the day which you get.

.ie will cost you more in the long run probably .. but for a business its next to nothing to have that little bit of extra peace of mind and brand protection.

.ie will also give a better google ranking for searches within Ireland (as far as I know)

    Cool, ta for the help/answers.
One last one. If you do a whois lookup on a website, it sometimes displays an address (I guess the details you enter when you register). I'm not sure if I want my home address up there. Can it be blocked?

If I had to choose - I'd go with a .com first.

The only reason I got a .ie as well is I happen to know there another dude with my name who stole my .com domain (until he let it lapse and I took it back. :D).

    It's dog-eat-dog out there!

They've got a one click install for various CMS's ( wordpress - blog I know but can be adapted ) .. Joomla (I'd steer clear of tbh ) Movable type and so on ... I've not used their one clicks though

You'd need to get some hosting as well .. this is just the domain name

There is as I said above a one click for wordpress if you want that ...

    Domain + Hosting + Wordpress + theme = away you go ?

    slightly off topic but...

in regard to the strict rules for registering a .IE domain in particular the one saying "It is NOT possible to register nicknames."

if my name is William Murphy but everyone knows me as Bill can I register billmurphy.ie or does it have to be williammurphy?

it's not a nickname, it's a shortened version of the first name

alternatively can the Irish version of the first name be used if the birthcert is the english name

ie - Sean vs John , Liam vs William etc

dear god I'm almost sorry I started the thread :P

    Have a look here http://www.pdn.ie/

I'm not sure about the irish / nickname thing sorry.

If you give your personal name and a bill to the registering company and provide a letter stating why you choose the nickname it'll possibly work.

(its making me think of discretionary domain names though so it'll possibly work out for you if you can make a justification why you should have it)

Edit: At the end of the day though ... its nighttime ... :D ... and its up to the IEDR whether you get it or not ... Blacknight / Domain Register doesn't have a say as such ... at least thats my understanding

and I finally get around to using mine and I just used it to transfer my work domain :)

The IEDR rules on personal names are at http://www.pdn.ie

If you are known as "jim" instead of "James" you can get the domain IF you have a bill or ID with that version of your name on it

When you register any domain with them you get a full control panel to edit your dns entries ... A ... MX .. redirect and so on (at least thats what I've got) I've not redirected anything anyway from them but it should be possible :)

If you cant edit the original post then send a mod a PM.. or you probably could report the post but a PM would be more appropriate.

Whats the twitter address/account? Oh and guess what - I was 2mins late registering a domain last night :P
