Just heard on the news that Ikea are opening in Dublin on Monday July 27 @ 11am.

    http://www.rte.ie/business/2009/0123/ikea.html

The boss who spoke on the radio said that if the euro remained strong against sterling you might still be better going to in Ikea in Belfast!

He also said that they will not be setting prices until May so I guess a lot will depend on the rate then.

He also said the M50 interchange/slip roads will be completed by this time.

They cant open until the M50 upgrade is complete so I doubt it will be open by then

The plot thickens. From last Wednesdays Irish Times:
However, Mr Dahlvig, who is responsible for Ikea’s global operations, strongly criticised the lengthy delay the company had experienced in setting up in Ireland. The Ikea store was more or less completed last month but has been standing idle because the road infrastructure on the M50 was not deemed to be adequate and has had to be upgraded.

“I don’t think we have ever had a store ready and operative that has to stand idle. We invested in all this infrastructure, we put millions and millions of euro into this and then we have the frustration of having this long negotiation with the road authority,” he said.

The bloody thing is ready to go, but our local authority are holding it up!

However, did you hear the Ikea guy this morning worm his way out of price commitment vs the Belfast store...

I believe the M50 works are well ahead of schedule, so it should be open by then.

We shouldn't be comparing the euro prices with sterling, we should compare against the euro prices on the Continent, with allowance made for extra VAT etc. Euro/sterling will always fluctuate, but euro/euro won't :)

I was checking the sterling prices of a couple of items against the French and German IKEA sites yesterday, and the sterling price is substantially cheaper - even if the Euro were to weaken back to 80p or so it would still be cheaper to go to Norn Iron.

As far as I know, it was always part of the Ikea planning permission that the M50 upgrade would have to be completed before the store opened. Therefore Ikea knew this even before construction started, so they can hardly start moaning now about it, especially as the road upgrade seems to be on schedule.

I thought it was Independent TD Finian McGrath who was fronting the push for an early opening, not just Ikea.

He was on the news the other day saying that he'd be pushing for an early opening for Ikea, as it was in his constituency, and from what he had gathered, his constituents (and probably Irish people in general, but I doubt that. We're moany feckers) would accept a few minutes inconvenience on the M50 if it meant 500 jobs in the area.

No their not. Do a bit of research. Its a condition of their planning permission issued by ABP.

If they were to open now you wouldnt be able to get in with the traffic congestion it would cause

True enough, but the NRA weren't willing to commit to when it *would* be finished, according to the report in the Irish Times online today. Plus the NRA didn't want it built at all.

ikea complaining about the road is just an easy media for them.

I don't know what all the hype is about! It's at best a "classy design" Bargain Town on steriods!

I bought a lot of stuff when I lived in the UK for an apartment I was renting and after you look at it for a while you see it for the cheap flat packed junk it is!

Just my opinion but I reckon the hype will be great for a few months then after a while people will see it for what it is!

And they will be like any other multi national and rip off us Irish versus their EU and UK stores!

Not normally negative but I hate to see us all hyped up and ripped off!

Is it even that good? I used to live in Australia. There's a couple of Ikeas in Sydney. I walked through them and I think all I came out with was some plates and cutlery. The furniture was really only stuff you'd buy to get you through a year. It was cheap alright. Maybe they're different in Europe. There was no mental traffic either.

Well, they have a range of stuff covering the cheap and nasty to the really very well made.

For instance, the Billy bookcases are used by a lot of people who really like books, as they are reasonbly cheap but study and offer lots of options. The cheapo Ivar pine shelving on the other hand is a nightmare and impossible to build straight and true.

Its been ready apart from the room for ages, all the equipment etc installed in October/November. And while the road was part of the planning permission, they did give the government several million euro to get it built, and were told it would be finished last year.

There's good and bad stock in Ikea, but they beat the pants off everyone else for unfussy contemporary design at an affordable price. Their kitchen units are as good as anyone else's (bar extortionate bespoke stuff) and offer a price and range unmatched by any of the competition. Shop wisely, as you would anywhere else and the place lives up to the hype.

And I'm sure that they'll do very well long-term out of the Irish punters - given how well they've done for years from Irish punters going to the UK for their stuff.

So they offered a bribe to break planning conditions. Oh the hypocrisy*
