Where will the axe fall?

Apparently government ministers have been holed up in a Dail building, behind closed doors for the last two days discussing how to implement savings and make outright cuts.

Besides cutting all civil servant wages between 2% to 5% - does anyone have a good guess as to where the other cuts or chops will come?

(I guess we will find out soon enough anyway and it won't be good news)

There's plenty of scope among themselves to cut, they're getting way too much money for so little constructive work. This country is going down the toilet and they're watching it happen. Any decisions they've made so far will have disasterous costs for the Irish taxpayer as it is.

We just cannot have it anymore. Everything they have done has fallen flat on its face. There is not a member of the cabinet with the business acumen to manage a chipper and yet we have them at the helm to steer through this global recession.
They will do what they always do. Faff about, hot air, make cuts where they arent needed or welcome, borrow more, and buy some banks.
I swear to God it's like a bunch of drunks playing monopoly.

Paying the GAA players. Stop it.

They all have jobs as it is and now they're getting expenses from the Gov for it.

    What a joke.

We need Michael O'Leary in charge of the public finances, but hands off Aer Lingus.

most countries in the world are in the same situation... who is the alternative? in the last election, FF and the PDs were returned to government with the Greens. FG are not really that different to FF in the greater scheme of things.

I'm a former Civil Servant and going out with a teacher so I have conflicts of interests, but I would say that the Civil Servants are a bit overpaid and expenses are ridiculous. Secondary teachers are off for 3 months and paid for this, yet some teachers are paid EXTRA to correct the state exams. I would stop this process and make it compulsory for teachers to correct exams 1 year of 3 without pay. Prob a lot of resistance, but its a money maker for some teachers!!

Not ALL, they don't have recessionary proof jobs by virtue of being GAA players, hence the increase in players emigrating to London etc.

Same with all the other part-time sportspeople in this country but they don't get the cushion of the Gov paying their "expenses".

Its a pretty **** job to correct those exams. Anyone who has done it will tell you that. 10 to 12 hours a day to hit the deadlines, constantly changing curves and points for answers, lots of pressure. I wouldnt take that away from the teachers. Cuts in education should not be made at a grassroots level IMO. Not while we are still at a stage where a class of 35 kids is being taught in a crappy pre-fab.

Dunno about O'Leary, but we need somebody with some form of management skills that might at least have some idea on how to steer us out of our economic troubles.

We're a fcuking joke all over Europe with our banks, having taken the piss (and wads of our dosh) for years.

We've no choices in terms of an alternative government either. We're fcuked!

Did i say, cuts in education? this is not education... this is correcting exams and would not affect the classroom. This is extra salary/wages that could be used to get the kids from those crappy prefabs to a better school. Granted the correction could suffer, but it shouldn't if the teachers are professional.

I now work bout 40/50 hrs a week so thats 10-12 hours a day some days, yet i don't have 2/3 months off in hte summer, a week in Oct, 2 weeks at xmas, a week in feb and some time off at Easter.....

Because they are amateur, not part time like LOI players.

Considering the amount of debt owed to the Revenue by LOI clubs, much of which they'll never see, 1/2 million is small chips.

Cut former-Politicians pentions by 10% for those getting over 60,000 and 15% from those getting over 100,000.

Cut Politicians pay by 7% across the board.

Have Politicians expences capped at a certain level, so they will stay in more affordable accomodation.

Raise tax on tobacco products, make it €9 for a pack of 20.

Raise the amount the goverment gets on petrol, small amount.

Thats all I can think of for now, While I know the politician cuts seem huge, why should these public "Servants" get so much??? They fcuked us up, time for them to pay for it!!!

Amateur means they're doing it free of charge, as a hobby. Or at least supposed to be.

Wexford Youths are an amateur LOI club and they don't get any Gov funding. What makes the GAA so special?

    Never any funding, you sure?

As for what makes them special, obviously a lot of people think they are.

I never understood how politicians get paid so much. Not just their basic wage but in expenses and bonuses also.
It's an absolute joke for them to tell us to tighten the belts when they won't even consider taking a pay cut to help with the economy

I could understand their pay, if they actually earned it, you know, like if they did a good job???

What the fcuk happened to all the money over the years ,I mean just weeks after the builders holidays(and they stopped building) the country is broke ,not even in a small way BILLIONS are dissapearing each week.Nothing kept for a rainy day ,they could have put 1billion away each year during the good times to at least buy time and weather the global recess a bit to make level headed decicions on where and what to tax.Instead of standin' there sayin "ohhh noo bollix ,bollix ,bollix tttaaaxxx everyone and anything you see ,shyte ,shyte ,shyte --I no, 2% delivery levy on new born babies in the coombe ,yeah ,yeah thats it make a fortune" All the taxation we've been hearing about since christmas has been PANIC TAXATION ,and this bunch PRSI worker arse rapist polititions are not gonna get us out of the shyte any time soon!
