Is it possible to publish CAD/CAM Files to a public forum and protect the work. Unfortunately I'll be covering patent/copyright law in the coming semester of my design course.

I would like to know about publishing files for free public use and distribution/reproduction but not for any commercial use without the authors permission. Is there somewhere files need to be registered or is there a GPL (general Public License?) that can be attached to the files to maintain intellectual property rights.

Would a simple disclaimer similar to this offer any protection.
The following files are available free for public use by the author. These files may not be used for commercial use or modification without the express permission of the author [insert name or pig-formatted email address]. By downloading these files you agree to abide by these terms of use.

If it is relevant I'm particularly interested in 3D CAD files in the formats .sldprt .sldasm and .IGES files. Similarly CAM files in .anc format. Alternatively would it be sufficient to embed a digital watermark on each file?

Many thanks for any help you can provide with this.

    Edit: Edited for subjectivity
