Renault Megane 97 electric problems

    Hi,
    over the last couple of days Ive started having problems with my 97 Renault Megane. I noticed that as I was driving the power of the electrics seem to period decrease e.g headlights would dim as would the display panel and the power of the heaters would decrease.
    While driving home today I noticed that this problem seemed to be linked to the brakes, whenever I depressed the brake pedal everything seemed to go dimmer and when I held it down the petrol gauge dropped to zero.
    Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this? I'm intending to take it on the weekend but thought I'd ask around first.
    I have recently replaced the battery with a new one so have considered this as the cause but I'm not sure why the brakes would be effecting things.
    Any help would be appeciated.

    As you have justrecently replaced the battery, I'd check the following:

    (1) Thet the battery terminals are (A) Clean, (B) Dry and (C) Tight

    (2) That the alternator belt is tight and not slipping. If it is, the alernator will not be charging properly...

    All being well on those two fronts, I'd test the alternator with a digital multimeter and check for voltage output at engin idle. It should be 14.5VDC at idle (+/- 0.25VDC)...

    If you have a reading of between 13.0 VDC and 14.0VDC, this would indicate an alternator charging problem. It's not an uncommon problem on your car...

    Cheers for that mate, seems to have done the trick, I was hoping it would be something fairly simple.
