I bought a low end MacBook in late 2007 and I kinda rue not getting one with a dvd-r drive. I can only burn cds with it.

I take it upgrading the optical drive is a big expensive task?

Yes thats looking like the wisest course of action.

Mactivate told me it would cost in the region of 3 to 400 smackers.

You'd buy a regular external burner for around €50. If you're looking for a fancy pants slim line one then you'd be looking at spending around €100.
