    Hi Everyone,

Whats the best blog site out there? I want to start a blog, more as a showcase of my writing rather than a bunch of ponderings (but maybe a little bit)
I want one site that I can give to potential editors or employers etc. I want it to look good, not professional as such but to be an effective advertisment of me!

    Thanks,
    Are blogs free?

Also if anyone does know, how much does it cost to have your own named website?

(mods if this is in the wrong place pls move, thanks)

Blogger is one of the biggest ones, it's also free to use.
I have a profile on it (but not for my creative writing).

Here's the link to the homepage.

There are many more besides that one, so you'll probably get more advice.

I've tried a couple, including blogger and typepad, and WordPress is the most flexible and user-friendly IMO.
    (wordpress.com.)

My blog: http://footballpress.wordpress.com -- not the prettiest but there are lots of (free) templates to choose from.

Like yourself girlbiker, I wanted to start a blog (albiet for different reasons) and didn't know anything about them.

A friend recommended wordpress. www.wordpress.com I was a little bit overwhelmed at first but I had the hang of it after about half an hour! It's really quite intuitive.

If you have a fairly basic understanding of computers you won't have a problem. If you're a bit of a technophobe, you can easily get someone to get you set up and it's easy peasy after that, you simply log in and type :) but I'd say you'll have no problems, since you're already using a computer!!

Wordpress allow you to pay for your own web address and forward it automatically. For example you'll automatically be given [username].wordpress.com i.e. if you chose girlbiker, it will be girlbiker.wordpress.com

But if you want to have your own web address, you can register it and have people automatically forwarded to your blog. Wordpress looks after all the nitty gritty of it, and it's all there as an option when you sign up. Costs 8 quid a year I think.

mine is http://irishpilotblog.wordpress.com or www.irishpilotblog.com (automatic forwarding like I said) (WARNING: still in it's infancy so don't think I am bragging about that!)

    Twitter?
You could also use Myspace and/or Bebo.

Though the main problem with these sites are they're mostly full of people putting out all sorts of crap on their blogs that it becomes almost impossible to find something good among it.

    Too true!

I have an "author's page" on Bebo for my poetry, but there's so much rubbish on the site that my page just gets lost in the mire. I should really move my stuff to a more respectable medium.

From what I can see alot of writers(in galway at least) are linked up via myspace,

I figure that would be the best bet,

    Something I should do soon.
