I recently had to go through this ordeal, transferring with a 90 minute window in-between flights and it was very close with me having to go to my gate.

You actually have to leave the airport, follow the flight connection signs, which is also the same path as the exit route. Once out of the secure part of the airport, head for the Heathrow express trains which will take you to terminal 5. Depending on the time of the day, you might have to wait 12 minutes for a train. Then when the train arrives, go to the 3rd floor for departures, and begin all of the security bullsh!t again.

As I mentioned, I nearly missed my connecting flight and got some smug BA assistant telling me I shouldn't have left the airport. I quickly informed her, that is the only way to transfer between terminals. Thinking back still angers me.

It also doesn't help that Aer Lingus drop you off in a section of the terminal that's about a mile from terminal 1. It's easily the worst airport, in terms of going from one terminal to an another. Allow 2 hours between flights.

I did it the other way round (5 to 1) and you dont have to leave the airport. There is a bus that takes you. Took about 30 mins.

Really, I did it a few times in the last month and have never had a problem with it, it's very straightforward.

    This thread might help

The Irish flights at heathrow land about as close to the terminal exit as Pier D at Dublin, except there is no passport control to go through so you get out pretty quickly I find.

Terminal 5 is huge though, some of the piers require a train journey, but once your luggage is onboard a lot of the pressure is off.

Bare in mind that my gate closed 30 minutes before, so that's 60 minutes, and plane was circling for 10 minutes and must have landed on a runway out around Slough as it took ages to taxi in. I had to run, and it was much too tight.

I was also told about a bus service, but there was no signs. Could it be only from 5 to 1?

If someone got off the tube at Paddington station the same time someone stepped off a plane in terminal 1, and walked from the tube station to board the Paddington Express. That person would be at Terminal 5 before the other at terminal 1.

presuming neither person had to wait for a train, i would say it was about the same. A lot depends on the time of day and, as you say, the runway you land on. if you come in over twickenham and end up near T5 it can take ten minutes to get to the stand, if you are really unlucky and end up at the stand in the middle of nowhere, you can have a ten minute bus journey back to the terminal.

I do it a lot, to the Heathrow express and the Bus station and 6 times out of ten it goes ok, 2 times it will all go perfectly and you can land and be at the platform in 20 minutes, the other two times it can be a nightmare.

    .

Yes, 1 to 5 is train, 5 to 1 is bus. Not entirely sure why this is.

    Train goes one-way.
