Clutch crunching noise, what is it?

Driving my 01' swb transit back from Belfast and about halfway back to Dublin each time I released the clutch changing gear there'd be a crunching noise and it would feel like the engine was gonna cut out, van would shake a little , but would be o.k.

Has been doing this since, though today it was only there in first gear the rest of the gears seemed much improved/ perfect.

Anyone know what this is , any advice?

    Cheers.

I think your van has a dual mass flywheel in it which forms part of the clutch assembly and they have a track record of falling apart. That's what this this sounds like to me...

Does it cause shuddering with a rattling sound when on the biting point of the clutch. If the van has a dual mass flywheel it sounds like its on the way out. Costly to fix. new clutch and flywheel assembly is close on €1000 including labour.

    Cheers lads,

Yeah shuddering at the bite is exactly what happens, but I really hope you're wrong as I can't afford a grand to get it repaired.

Will consider getting another van,as this will be the second repair job in a year.

Should I get it repaired and then sell it, trade it in as is?

Whats annoying is it doesn't get very heavy use, Any advice on a van thats known for not breaking down, what about a hiace?
