    Hi,
PS3 Latest firmware (2.60) has a cool new Photo Gallery feature , the thing is when you load photos etc you have the option to sort the photos .

One of the sort options is by smiles (photos with smiles in them ) , when I selected this sure enough it got about 80% accuracy and filtered out photos with smiley people in em ??? ...How in Gods earth does it do this ?

Really Interested cause I am baffled .

    M.

There are various ways this could be done, but the general idea is some form of classification algorithm. For a simple example, the software is trained on big sets of input photos, which are labelled as "smile" or "not smile" - it automatically works out what it thinks (statistically) makes the smile photos different to others. Once trained, the system is ready to use - give it a new photo, it compares it to its trained model and decides if it is a smile or not...

Classification is used in loads of software - spam email detection is another common example.
