hi everyone, im new to this site so im sorry if im posting this in the wrong place! Im just wondering if anyone can help me. Im a nearly qualified car mechanic (finished all phases, just waiting on papers to come through) and im thinking of training to be an aircraft mechanic/engineer but im not too sure how to go about it. Also someone told me that because im already a mechanic I wouldnt have to do a full apprenticeship again but i dont know how true this is. If anybody could shed some light on this I would be really grateful.:D

I know my cousin moved from motor straight across, but at the time they were desperate.

Another cousin tried the same thing and was told not a hope in hell, despite it being the same company.

All in all though, aircraft and cars are fairly different in that everything that is done to an aircraft is written down in stone before you do it. And theres no try it now and lets see. Or that could be the germans im with.

Moral of the story, Try it and see what they say.

I know they do this down in Shannon, friend of mine is nearly through. He's a bit worried bout what his job prospects will be like once he completes his apprenticeship though as many airlines have gone bang in recent years. I.e: There's a lot of aviation engineers out there looking for work as is. The same can be said for motor mechanics but if you're worth your salt whichever garage you've served your time in should keep you on. There's always work for good workers and your foot is already in the door here!

It seems the airline industry is always up and down, I wouldnt be so sure about saying alot of engineers are looking for work at the mo(especially if your willing to do a bit of travelling for a while).

Id imagine to get your licenses (basically make a good career of it) you'll have to completely retrain, but you should have no problems getting the apprenticeship if your already a mechanic. You'd be the ideal candidate at the moment.

Shannon Aerospace start traineeships all the time, its short, you'll be effectively on the dole for 2 years(+rent allowance etc), and you only get an A license( a technician), however it gives you the freedom to not have to commit to another 4 years. Also you can choose to start working on the B license exams whenever you want after about a year after you start. Basically it will be left up to you in the long run to take more exams and get experience if you want to advance yourself further.

Or Air Atlanta, a 4 year apprenticeship, where you get a B license(engineer) at the end and better pay throughout. However you'll have to commit to it thats the difference. Also I think they only take a few people on annually, not too sure about that one.
Either way itll be up to you to do the work over the next few years if you want to become an engineer.

I dont know much about the other options, i.e. Ryanair or SRT, but Id imagine theyre apprenticeships along the same route as Air Atlanta.
    Best of luck

Once your papers come through, get in touch with Shannon Aerospace. In the past (not sure if it still happens) they've taken on "Direct Entry" mechanics, giving them 6 months cross-training. Provided you're reasonably competent you'll find aircraft a piece of pi$$ to work, except for the paperwork.

    Hi

I have nearly a years experience with Shannon aerospace and am considering moving on to work with another maint comp or else contracting.

Does anyone know how I would go about getting involved with contracting? or else how I would go about getting into another maint firm?

    any help would be great!

Leaving now would be daft, Summer time is upon us and the annual clearout of connies across Europe & UK is well under way. Unless you have a mate in a Hangar somewhere that can get you in or a full B1 with a type or 2 then wait until September'ish. Also, given that you have ONLY "almost a yrs experience" be prepared to get turned down alot for contracts (unless you're a sheetie). Find the guys that contract (allegedly) in their time off and ask them.

As for going permanent elsewhere, there aren't many options; SRT is no more, airlines will want a B1 or B2 & don't know about Air Atlanta. Outside of Ireland most places have hiring freezes in place until the downturn upturns.....

Either way, if you are intent, put a CV together, email the agencies (back of flight is a good start) & followup with a call the next day.

Did the aptitude test, I thought i did well enough at the time. Consists of 2 sections, both with multiple choice answers. First was a kind of reading comprehension, where there is a passage, followed by a question, where the answer was in the passage.
Second test was a kind of mechanical aptitude test, things like weights gears etc.

Got through that it seems, as i have now been called for an interview :)
    go me!

first test is easy, just read the questions, then answer the multiple choices. second bit i ran bit short of time, so may want to try and go faster. Its mostly about what way mechanisms would move/pivot etc with diagrams.

    Thx phil

What kind of multiple question are they and what kind of practical excersice is ?

Have you been interview ? How long was that what did they ask ?

Have you been selected or yet waiting for medical.

    Thanks

well each test had 2 example questions at the beginning. we filled in these first, and were told if we had them right or wrong then, and why they were right or wrong. Usually everyone got this test question wrong, as it is meant to kind of trick you. as an example.

it lists 3types of helmets, fireman, standard construction, and one special electrically insulate one. It then asked the question, which is the most common. a fireman b construction c electrical insulate one or d unknown (or something similar)

Your thinking standard construction arent you? Nope, it was the unknown one because it is not stated in the text. Answers are to be from text only!

Another sample one i recall was it listed types of fire extinguishers, with their uses, and then asks what type to use for a type of fire. this was normal, no trick question.

as for the second test, it also had example questions you are meant to get wrong. one i can recall was like 2 bolts fastening 2 bits of wood together, which one was providing more force.
Other ones were graphical about gears and pulleys and hinged motion, do this, what happens to this blah blah. It is not hard, but you do have to be quick. I could have done with an extra 2 mins on this one!

Those 2 tests were on the one sitting by the way.

as for interview, i have one coming up with them now in a few weeks, not as far as the medical yet though.
anything else, pm me and ill try and remember!
