My PS3 is not reading discs. Has anyone else had this problem and sorted it. Its my bro's console, and he doesnt have receipts or anything I think. He didnt sign up and maybe register it online when he got it about 8 months ago

Ring Sony, you may have the Blueray of Death. I rang for my mate and they didn't ask for his receipt, just that he brought it back to the shop he got it from with the ref number they gave me over the phone.

I just came on to make a topic about the same problem, ive had mine about a year and the same thing happened about 4 months ago. I left it for a week and it just started working again and has been grand since but a few days ago it just stopped again. Will have to give them a ring to see what they say.

Definately BluRay Of Death. There are a few threads around with people who had the same problem, and got it sorted with little or no fuss.

Please god yeah. Anyway, I hear a hard drive format may or may not solve your problem?

    Worth a go?

You could try contacting Sony first as they have been known to replace out of warranty machines with this problem.

Oh right. Ill try that. Its me brothers PS3 but it went when I had it so obviously Im gonna pay for it . He said he went into the sony centre and they told him that they cant fix it so he went to game stop and they told him that they will take his PS3 off him and €250 for a new PS3. I think Ill just ring sony meself and see what they say.

Mine had same problem. It happened on Sunday night just gone. Settled into have a nice game of COD4 and it just froze. No disc would run. Having kept up to date here knew exactly what it was so and was upset as I had it 1 year, 3 weeks and 2 days. Rang sony first thing monday morning. Was waiting on hold for 15 mins but they took all the details they recognised it as a fault straight away and said I'd have an email by wednesday and gave me a reference number. They said I should try the shop I bought it from (HMV Sq) and see if they would do anything. Rang them and there first answer was it out of warranty so cant help but got talking to them a bit and because I got a reference number they'd replace it no hassle. The only kicker was they had none:(. They rang Grafton street branch and got them to hang on to one of the last ones. Got straight into the car and got my replacement happy days... they gave me a 40GB in exchange for a 40GB (thought I might have gotten an 80GB). So great service all round from both sides. Had to share as it seems like people post bad stories and the good stories just dont make it here in the same volume.

Thats what Sony will charge you if you send it back out of warranty. They will send out a courier to pick yours up and send another one back to you in a few days.
